Any suggestion for some weird surprise weapon to use against a d4-player in a slow game?

My game plan is already based on one or two prayers. Adding another cannot hurt!

The Bozo-Indian, of course!  (1 d4  Nc6).  Basically a mirror image Alekine's Defense.  Quite playable and great fun.

The modern benoni is fun and gives black active play in return for a weak structure. I don't think it is that popular anymore so it might be a surprise. The annoying thing about it is white can avoid pushing his pawn to d5 if he doesn't want to play it.

I always play 1.d4 and have never faced the Budapest though I’ve played it myself a few times so it wouldn’t be a surprise. The Albin Counter Gambit…that would be a nasty surprise…never faced it; never played it. Wouldn’t have the slightest idea what to do!

I like the Modern Benoni too.  It is very complex, but well worth it if you take the time to learn it

I play 1.d4, OTB around the 1900-2000 level.

I see both the Budapest and the Albin's Counter Gambit more often than the Modern Benoni. What's more, against the gambits I have a big plus score, against the Benoni I score 50-50 at best...

The first instinct of a (below 2000) 1.d4 player is to keep Black under control. With the Benoni that usually isn't possible (once you commit four pieces to stop Black from going b7-b5, chances for him are bound to come up all over the place...), instead White needs to go for the attack while allowing Black his fair share as well.

Plus, the Benoni is simply a better opening!

My thought exactly. It is perfectly sound, if you want a great reference, see http://www.jeremysilman.com/chess_opng_shrtcts/01_black_knights_tango.html. The four part series will have you will prepared should you want to be. It is also known as the black knights tango.

The Chigorin is worth a peek. Blocking your own c-pawn and allowing cxd5 Qxd5 seems to cut across the normal principles of chess. There's also ...b6 or the Hippo.

The Baltic Defense (1.d4 d5 2.c4 Bf5) is really rare and there's the symmetrical approach with 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c5 but it's dangerous for Black.

The BoZo-Indian is not the same thing as the BoGo-Indian Wink  The Bogo-Indian is much more respectable, but the Bozo-Indian is playable and arguably more fun.  It certainly has more surprise value.

Here's an opening monograph that covers it:

http://www.chesscentral.com/pickard/Bozo-Indian_Defense.htm

Since Farbror asked for a weird surprise weapon I was just trying to oblige.  The Bozo-Indian is definitely offbeat but it is NOT just a joke.
