thats not good
The scandinavian opening
Just play 3. ... Qd8 instead of 3. ... Q a5. It's a valid line with no serious downside.
wasted tempo
Who knows? People are different. A player can click with an opening and it can make a difference.
Or maybe it's a matter of picking an opening out of left field which opponents don't expect and exploiting that edge.
The Scandinavian was a main weapon for a friend of mine who went on to Master and beat Pal Benko on one good day.
My friend played like a wolverine. There was nothing pretty about it. He would steer towards a complex, open or semi-open position, and then start clawing at his opponent's underbelly.
I really like the Scandi. Especially with 2...Nf6. You get the pawn back except in one line, and in that line you get a sweet attack. I think it's among the most attacking openings out there and also one of the oldest (heard somewhere that the oldest recorded game is a Scandi).
I will try some different variations on the scandinavian, i just need a different approach of the opening because it seems that i'm doing everything wrong.. for starters i think i should always play c6 to prevent my queen from getting trapped..
what else?
I hope you're not calling the position after 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.c4 e6? the one where Black gets a sweet attack (3...c6 on the other hand regains the pawn comfortably as 4.dxc6 is actually better for Black)
The 3...c6 variation is much better as you note.
@melvinbluestone just because i don't like the scandinavian doesn't mean that i have to NOT play it... i want to enlarge my opening repertoire so that i'd become a better player...
anyways, thanks for that 4.b4 pawn sacrifice line, really liked it.., tells me whatever you do always stay focused and never neglect any detail on the board.
the guy is just cruisin' for a bruisin'.
