I don't have a specific system against the Sicilian Dragon (I do play it as black), and often as white I find myself being attacked so much that I can't defend (if I follow the main line) without being crushed. I do want to get into the dragon:
(I don't want to play Closed Sicilian, Grand Prix, Alapin etc) But I want a different variation other than the Yugoslav. Would the Classical Variation be a good choice to try to attack black or is there better somewhere else? Thanks for your assistance
Well, the Yugoslav is both the best and easiest to play in my opinion. The Classical isn't as threatening as far as I know. You could try 5.f3 and go into a Maroczy Bind structure if they play 5...g6 with 6.c4.
How about the Levenfish (6. f4)? It went out of fashion about 100 years ago, so most Dragon-playing opponents won't be booked-up on it.
It has the added advantage that Black's most natural reply on move 6 (6. ... Bg7) is a serious error.
Here's a game that I played a couple of decades ago:
If you don't bother about much theory memorization then 6.g3 is a good try.
Your guys and your theory. Just play the bb5 Sicilian. Problem solved
I also like the Bb5(+) Sicilians, but they aren't plainsailing, either.
I can mention the latest book on the subject, by GM Gawain Jones. He is advocating for white a line which is not dangerous at all for Black: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bb5+ Bd7 4.Bxd7+ Qxd7 5.0-0 (IMO 5.c4 is the only real try for some opening advantage) Nc6 (5...Nf6 is perfectly playable too, the old suggestion 6.e5 is no more than equal) 6.Qe2 Nf6 7.Rd1, where the computer-genned suggestion 7...g5! is perfectly adequate- white has absolutely no advantage- after analysing this for a long time, I eventually gave up, white has nothing.
I'm looking at quick g4 stuff:
This isn't something to worry Black. True, if Black plays 10...d5 (most natural) then 11.f5 might give white something (most probably not), but the simple 10...Rc8 is safe, and sound.
So do you recommend the Levenfish Variation?
I could recommend anything which gives a playable position, and does not require memorizing a crapload. The Levenfish is somewhat close to these requirements, so it's a matter of personal taste to adopt it or not.
I think I'll learn it. Thanks for taking time to help me out!
Not really, Bg7 is fine.
As a Dragon player, I'd rather not tell you how to beat me :), but the Yugoslav is definitely the best system against it. Try the 9. g4 lines.
Which line after 6. ... Bg7 is OK for Black? I'm under the impression that White gets a signifigant advantage in all lines of that sub-variation.
Black isn't terribly well after 6...Bg7?! 7.e5 Nh5 8.Bb5+ Bd7 9.Qe2.
9.e6 is a lemon.
6...Nc6 is best answered by 7.Nf3.
Can I just use what's in "Pawn Structure Chess" to play this?
