fischeryouth,

I really like the Nimzo-Larsen. I think you're right in saying that it's a very underrated opening.

Also, St. George's Defense is VERY UNDERRATED and VERY PLAYABLE:

Why not try the ultimate in transpositional openings?:  1 c3.  You'll either get the Slav or the Caro-Kann with a move in hand (personally, I would probably play 1... f5).

yes the saragossa good in theory however the problem is black dosen't have to play 1.d5 or 1.e5 and has alot of challenging moves like you said 1. f5 or 1.Nf6 this is the only problem with an otherwise awesome opening.

Yeah I think the Vienna is underrated by why play it when you have the ruy lopez which scores better GM's would say.

Why are you here? Why are you playing chess?

With white - the Nimzo-Larsen is, I think, the most underated. It's interesting that in Kasparov's book "Revolution in the 70s", there is barely any mention of the Nimzo-Larsen. I play the NLA all the time and have archived more than 150 games that open with 1.b3. I have good stats with it, but of course that's against opponents close to my own level. I started a group here at chess.com - Nimzo/Larsen Attack (A01) Come on by and check it out. Wink

i think the reti opening is slightly underrated (1. Nf3 d5 2. c4). i'm currently playing a theme tournament with it and so far i'm finding it pretty interesting.

I think the Dutch Defense is underated. 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3 dxc3 4.Bc4 cxb2

5. Bxb2. This leads to many imbalences. Black's next two moves MUST be Bb4+ and

then Nf6.

The bizarre Grob Attack (1.g4) can get very tactical if Black gets a little careless. I’ve used it successfully against players under 2000. Over that…no way!

If you’re talking serious stuff though the QGD Chigorin Defense (1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6). Black develops with a direct effect on the center and there’s a lot of piece play.

The Ponziani 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3, the Ruy Lopez Smyslov 3.Bb5 g6, the Vienna 2.Nc3 and the Dutch Staunton Gambit 1.d4 f5 2.e4.  These all have scored good results at high levels, but are rarely played.
