Was trying to find a winning line for white with the Archangel (6...Bb7) when this line of play got my attention: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.o-o b5 6.Bb3 Bb7 (the archangel) 7.c3 Nxe4 8.Re1 Nc5 (might be considered a refutation fot this move? What do you think?) 9.d4 Nxb3 10.Nxe5 Nxe5 11.Rxe5+ Be7 12.Qg4 Nxa1 13.Qxg7 Rf8 14.Bh6 and # next
12...g6 13.Bg5 and black is in serious trouble
12...o-o 13.axb3 d6 14.Bh6 (with the threat of mate in 1) g6 15.Re3 (with the threat of capturing their rook) Re8 16.Qe2 with the threat of pressure on the efile) Bf6 17.Nd2 and we have developed all our pieces with a possible threat of tripling our pressure on the efile.
Because of the 13...Bf6 line, white should move 13.axb3 instead of 13.Bh6, thus have a budding attack on the black king.
So any improvements on this line of play is most welcome. Might as well consider this as a work in progress.
LAGER
I would be thinking 8 Re1.... d5!
Sorry meant Na5 not d5, forgive me !
LAGER, 8...Na5 9.Bc2 would attack blacks' knight with gain in tempo.
danthebugman,12...d6 13.Re1 and the situation is better for white because white got the hanging rook at e5 to the safety of e1.
danthebugman,12...d6 13.Re1 Nxa1 14.Qxg7 Rf8 15.Bh6 and we are back on the main line as described above.
The move is 13.Re1, not 13.Qxf7 so as to remove the threat of ..dxe5.
Estragon
It doesn't matter. 13 Re1 Nxa1 14 Qxg7 Rf8 transposes. White's attack has run out of gas. 15 Bh6 Kd7 and Black takes the money and runs.
Your 9 d4 is suspect, although you would be okay with 12 ... axb3, but no advantage to speak of. Better to save the Bishop with 9 Bc2 and await developments. White should be a little better after that due to his immediate d2-d4, retaining some initiative. Probably still nothing to write home about.
