Besides Sicilian and French (in case you do) what do you like to play as Black, against e4?

Casual_Joe

Caro-Kann.

e5

wilford-n

I almost exclusively play the Sicilian against 1.e4. Otherwise I play ...e5, with an eye towards a Scotch or Italian game.

I used to play the Ruy Lopez a lot and have been considering reviving that part of my repretoire, but I get too impatient in closed games, which seems to be the preference for black.

I like playing 1...e5 and 1...c6, and hate 1...c5 and 1...e6 (because I find them so easy to play against as White against players of a similar level).

I play either a Taimanov line or Petrov Defese as Black mainly. I have a decent understanding of the positions that arise from them and so I tnd to favor these defenses pretty much.

DrSpudnik

French

Nice idea there jempty.

I used to play the Kierzersky against the KGA with some interesting games many years ago (reviving it lsat year against a coffee house friend of mine wih some fantasic knockouts and miniatures both in Blitz and OTB games.

Fear_ItseIf

The scandinavian 2..nf6 lines with

3.d4 bg4

3.bb5+ bd7 4.bc4 bg4

3.c4 c6 and now

4.nc3 cxd5 5.d4 g6 with a 5..g6 caro kann

I play Online Chess almost exclusively. So I'm not looking for razzle-dazzle, try-to-throw-my-opponent-on-the-first-move types of moves. I respond with 1. ... e5. White usually plays the Ruy Lopez or Italian Game from here, and I personally have good results as Black.

Somehow I guess most players think any check on the e1-h4 diagonal is bad but Bh4 usually elicits either Ke2 or g3 and as long as the Knight cannot take with much equality, it seems OK to take the check by the Bishop.

Now the Queen on the other hand, I see most playing Ke2 or sometimes Kf1.

Either way, I have not seen many  of my friends play the Cuningham except for my friend Steve at our State Open I think.

MSteen

Almost always e5.

1...b6 is the Owen's Defense. 1...d6 is the Pirc.

yes. my bad. I meant Philidor as well via this move order

If you want to try something hypermodern, i suggest the pirc.
I usually play sicilian, it gives you more flexibility and it's better if you want to capture the center with pawns. i think e5 gives the opponet to much the ability to decide how the game will continue, and i just don't like the caro-kann, then except french, i think the better move is c5.

By the way, alekhine's defense is nice too sometimes, you should try it.
