The Caro-kann may have a weaker queensideside in some cases, but in contrast the French can have a difficult bishop to work with.

Every (sound) defense will have it's strengths and weaknesses. It's all about using the strengths to find opportunities and mitigating threats against your weaknesses. Some may have more strengths at the expense of having more weaknesses, or less weaknesses with less strengths - it's a matter of finding what (balance/position/plan) works for you.

There's not a best opening yet because chess hasn't yet been solved. But there are certainly rubbish ones. You need to try different variations out and after a while you will  find an opening you play well with. But soon you shall feel the awesome might of the Tromp...

But I tend to think that there may be some openings that have greater chances of success, against an average player, than others. I would love to learn these first. This may also depend on the color of the pieces you have to play, and the opening or defense that tthe other player uses.

I have also heard thet there are some opening traps, and once oyu fall into one of these it is close to impossible to recover, provided you are playing against someone in your range of play.

There is no best opening but complex tricky openings are best avoided by club players. You could do no better than to start by playing the time-honoured e4.

Does making a best openning makes you a winner?

From the 20 games I play , 15 are training games with friends that want to play with me.We discuss the moves and the plans and we all learn.

   I am not untitled , I just didn't bother to bring my papers.But send me a message and I can tell you my ID at the Greek Chess federation to see my title and my rating.It was 2200(back at 1984 to get 2200 playing in Greece was not an easy task, I was never a talent , I can admit that but I worked very hard for 4 years) at my good days, I have Informator 1984 with my name , I can send a photocopy of the page with a photocopy of my Id to prove it to anyone that cares, plus 2 times champion with my chess club under 20 at Greek Team championship.

   But you don't answer if what I say is correct ,you just accuse.What if I am untitled?Since when  the titles are the criterion for having right or wrong?

Where are your arguments?Don't you have any?Your problem is not if or if I don't use Rybka or Fritz.You will still be the same ignorant even if all chess.com is using Rybka or Fritz.Instead of trying to open your eyes you only care if I use or not engine.Will that make your life easier?Would you find more and easier excuses?

Your comment is a clear prove of your confuse.I am willing to teach you and you will realise how much I need or use Rybka.

In topics like this I have sen all kinds of naive answers like:

"The best chess opening is the one that the other player doesn't know how to handle"  or

"The best opening is the one your opponent doesn't expect"   or

"The best opening is the one your opponent doesn't know"

If you are a grandmaster these answers are correct but when I see low rated players give answers like that, I can't avoid not to laugh.

    It's not about what your opponent knows or expect or can handle.It's about what you know and what you can handle and what you expect from yourself.

   If you want only to win low level players  and stay at the same level for ever , again these are the answers you are looking for, stop searching.But if you expect to improve and play better you should care only to understand and you should try to play with people that expect and can handle the opening you know because that way you will learn it better.

   Winning some guys that don't know the opening and played stupid will get you nowhere.Winning some guys that played you the best will help you to understand the plans and the ideas.

   If right now I give you a "magic" opening that will help you win your next 20 opponents, because they don't expect it, do you know what will happen?Simple, after 20 wins you will be EXACTLY at the same level.But if I help you understand an opening, you will probably lose from your next 20 opponents but wins will eventually come and they will be the result of your improvement.

   Chinese say:

"If you see someone hungry, don't give him food , teach him how to fish" 

       It's not the opening that makes you a winner.
