What is the best opening for you? I say danish gambit or four knights opening if I'm white. As black i like to play the spike attack ,if i can. So what do you play?

I like to be aggresive so I play Queen's Gambit Nc3 with White and I play the Pirc Defence vs. 1.e4 and Blumenfeld Gambit vs. 1.d4 with Black.

I am currently trying to find a good opening. Everything I have tried seems to fall apart, expctially against players who make moves that are never played.

When somebody varies from the book line, we have to study deeply to find whether they are unsound or just rarely played variations. In 80% of cases I have found the deviations unsound, and they account for the lion's share of my wins. It is useless to follow a book or database line unless I understand the concepts behind them.

The best openings I have found are the Ruy Lopez, Sicilian - about 50 and 100 pages are devoted to them respectively in the MCO.

My best opening is the Italian or also known as Giouco Piano.

Dutch or benko gambit if black, starting to enjoy the polar bear with white

As White I play absolute main lines after 1.d4, and slightly less main lines (c3 sicilian, four knights) after 1.e4.

As Black, Semi-Slav vs 1.d4 (or whatever I feel like at the time, Nimzo, Black Knights Tango, Dutch). Against 1.e4, I used to play the Accelerated Dragon for ages, then tried the Classical Sicilian, but now I want to start playing 1...e5, waiting for the right game to play it in.

I like standard 1.e4 openings as White, but I tried the Reti system and KIA as well. As Black I prefer Pirc Defense against 1. e4 and KID against 1. d4 (maybe changing to a Benoni hybrid when I'm in the mood).

I am usually playing the Alekhine's defence. I've tried King's Gambit, Reti System, and Gruenfeld defence.

I'm still a novice of Chess. I usually open with e4 and work out from the Ruy Lopez opening as white , as black I've been responding with the French defense. There are so many openings to choose and to study.I have read that it's good to select an opening and learn all that you can from it.

I play 1.e4 as White, and vs:

    1...e5, King's Gambit
    1...c5, Grand Prix Attack
    1...e6, Advanced French

    As black, vs:

    1.e4, 2...Nf6 Scandinavian
1.d5, Benko Gambit (KID if not 2.c4)
    1.c5, Reversed Sicilian

Wow! This thread stumps me. I don't know the name of any opening.

funtimenow, it does not matter if you do not know names of openings. Knowing the names does not make winning any easier Wink

    Here's what I play:

    As black I play :

    1. Against 1.e4, I play the Najdorf Sicilian when I need to win, and the Caro-Kann, when I have to work for a draw. I also play the Scandinavian sometimes, it's a relatively simple, active setup.

    2. Against 1.d4, I play hte KID, and sometimes, the Semi-Slav or Gruenfeld. It depends on my mood, really.

    3. I try to get 1.c4 openings into the KID.

As white, I usually go for 1.e4. I like the Closed Sicilian and Grand Prix lines for white, and I also play the KIA quite often, especially in blitz games.

My openings depends on the opponent.  My main goal is to control the center thus the Bishop's Opening, Center Game and Four Knight's Game are favorites.  I've started to study the different Gamits and the Ruy Lopez in order to add some differents sets to my game.
