I have been playing the english for white and although I like it, I just don't think it suits my game. For black I use Alekhine's defense against e4 and the bogo and budapest gambit against d4 with the occasional KID. The point is my black results are far superior than my white. That is plain wrong! So if anyone could suggest a couple openings that may suit my game, I would appreciate it. Cheers!

Have you tried the Giuco Piano, or the Evan's Gambit, or the Morra Smith Gambit

*sigh* no offense, but many of these suggestions have no bearing on the thread starter 's playing style but are merely a poster's preference.

Now, you say you fare well with "Alekhine's..." and "bogo-indian.../budapest...", which, are generally hypermodern defenses. The ruy-lopez is a good opening, make no mistake, but its generally classical and you may be going farther away from your sweet spot. What your playing now is hypermodern(1.c4) but if your not playing well with it, I'd try to another hypermodern opening to test the waters. Options such as 1.Nf3, 1.g3, or even 1.b3 may bring interest to you.

Then again, it may be that you play white instinctively (and unknowingly) better with classical setups; meaning, 1. e4 or 1. d4 may suit you more. I have no interest in recommending a favorite opening of "mine" for you to play.

Thanks nimzo, I think you may have hit the proverbial nail on the head. I definitely prefer they hyper-modern with black and one of the reasons I play those openings ( i forgot to mention) is they somewhat dictate the opening's in my favor. At least that is how I perceived it. When I was a young lad I played the giuco piano to death so perhaps going back to classical style for white might be the best. I am curious to what opening you use and why? If you have the time that is.

Currently, my responses for 1.e4 and 1.d4 are the Pirc and KID respectively. I also tend to avoid lines that involve a closed center.  For white, lately, I've been playing around with 1.g3-I've been through many interesting "reverse-opening" games because of it. I'm glad that I was of help to you, and good luck with your opening search.

The Alekhine and budapest openings in particular are sharp defenses that require more tactical skill than maneuvering. It sounds to me that you are more of a tactician, which indicates e4 and playing more open positions.

As a Scocth user....it has it's drawbacks, but if you like to attack and have a clean board, few openings are better.

If you're playing the English, then the classic Queen's Gambit may be up your alley.  It's still playing with the open c file (usually) but controls the center a little more and is pretty easy to learn.  Start 1. d4 then follow up almost anything with 2. c4.  Those exceptions would be 1...c5 or anything else that attacks the d4 pawn, in which case the advance d4-d5 is usually played, then c4 later.  So basically you're playing some English-style games with better and earlier central control.

You sound like someone who would appreciate the Vienna Game or Bishop's Opening to me. You can transpose to favorable lines of many other openings from either of them if you need to. Laughing

I would recommend the bongcloud attack. 1. e4 ....e5 2. Ke2! There are few who can repel the awesome killing power of the white king!!

If you like the king's indian defence as black why not try the king's indian attack as white?

I don't think that anyone can really give you a logical answer to your question. I suggest trying different opening untill you find an opening you are comfortable with. Here players can only suggest opening their familar with and that may not fit your style of play. Beside you are going to switch/change openings at some point of time when you gain a better understanding in chess.

i believe that u should stick to the english since its variations can be confined but needs lot of practice .....this is much better than go for the tremendous variations of e4 or d4

1. Nf3 (Reti)

Now you're playing the game you usually play as black.... except now you have an extra move to waste or use.  the white Alekhine Defence won't play out because you don't have the ability to draw the black e-pawn to you.  you may also like 1.Nc3 (Dunst).  at the very least... you'll know the opening better than classical players Tongue out and isn't that what these openings are for after all.
