It's scotch opening, considered to be the best try to fight for an advantage with white after 1e4, apart from ruy lopez.
Thanks a lot.. I appreciate it.
There seems to be many possibilities with it.
I play this opening some time too , but didn't know its name.
Thanks
this is my number 1 opening...it is called The Scotch Game.
If my opponent tries to play the Ruy Lopez I always transfer into the Scotch Game. It just makes my life so much easier and it gives better drawing chances if I am playing against a strong player.
I'm looking at some games on ChessGames.com..
It seems like it's really easy for Black to make a mistake.
The story behind the name of this opening is actually quite funny.
It was first played (or first recorded perhaps) in a correspondence match between London (England) and Edinburgh (Scotland) in the 19th century.
London (as white) played 3.d4, but went on to lose the game. In subsequent games of the match the Edinburgh team went on to use the opening themselves! The opening (3.d4) was then named the Scotch after the winning Scottish side.
Had white won then it might have been named the English (except of course that name had already been taken 1.c4)
The games and a brief history of the match can be found here http://www.edinburghchessclub.co.uk/ecchist2.htm
