"None of these wacky gambits are sound - if they were, they wouldn't be wacky gambits, would they?" Now, wait a minute! You gave them the name "wacky"! That's like saying "None of these bad openings are good - if they were, they wouldn't be bad." Or, it's like "None of these Rob Schneider movies are good - if they were, they wouldn't be Rob Schneider movies." Hey, that's true! You might have something there!
The problem with the Smith-Morra is that if Black adopts a Nadjorf or Scheveningen approach, White has a hard time showing anything for the pawn. The tempo Black lost for the pawn is made up by delaying castling in many cases.
GM Larry Evans was a friend and collaborator of SM Ken Smith, founder of Chess Digest and the man who revitalized the Smith-Morra almost singlehandedly. Evans always dismissed the gambit, and was never impressed with White's ideas. His view was that White can get active play and attacking chances in the Sicilian in many lines anyway, why give up a pawn for it?
As I recall, Smith drew his SM game at San Antonio '72
Any record of Evans playing against a S-M gambit? I checked chessgames.com, but they didn't have any. In fact, they only had 24 games! Pretty paltry amount for such a great player.....
Fischer played the Smith Morra once against Korchnoi.
Doesn't look like Fischer got much out of it, either, except some play on the c-file. Too bad he couldn't play 22.Rdc1. I guess he figured it was time to get the pawn back.
