Aside from the Petroff, satxusa took the words right out of my mouth. Marshall Scandinavian against e4 and Tarrasch against the others, although I tried the Classical Dutch for a while and hated it. Now I'm waiting for someone to let me play the Von Hennig-Schara Gambit in the Tarrasch.
Against 1. P-K4 the sicilian defense, and hopefully the Najforf Variation
Against everything else I use the king's indian defense.
against e4:french or alekhine
against d4:KID or slav
vs ruy lopez i play Cozio.
Other than that. just winging it.
Kings Indian Defense,
I love playing 1...d6 against all of White's first moves. Sometimes, against 1. d4, I play the Classical Dutch
...I think the only times I do not play c5 is either vs b4 (which I play e5 against) and if I want a less crazy game I play d5 vs d4.
Out of genuine curiosity, and not trying to be facetious at all, what would you say that your general win percentage is as black always playing c5?
the french against e4 and the semi-slav against d4.
I'm very confident with my play in the opening and I often reach positions I like playing (either hedgehog type positions, benoni type positions or sicilian variations)Incidentally I also play 1. c4 vs everything and often I come into identical systems to c4 when I play c5 (sometimes a tempi down but that's in closed positions and thus irrelevant) which means that I have ALOT of experience with these.Furthermore, sicilian, benoni and the english positions are always very unbalanced and tthere is often a lack of symmetry in the middlegame. (aside from certain c5 systems but black tends to struggle alot if he tries to maintain symmetry)So summing it up, playing c4/c5 versus everything allows me to constantly get into positions that are both positionally and tactically demanding and also allows me to stay within territory that I'm confident with.
Thanks for getting back to me on that, I SEE that you are a "C" kind of guy, lol. Is there any way that I could SEE any of your games? I truly find this approach very interesting, and as a rank beginner I really haven't "settled in" on any one opening as black, so I'd like to SEE the positons you reach with this approach. H.G.
I usually go with eeny, meeny, miny, moe and hopefully that works :)
Caro kann against e4
Slav against d4
Typically I'll enter a kings indian type position against the English.
For all the other openings generally 1...d5 2...Nf6
Against d4 --> Grunfeld Indian (normally) and sometimes Nimzo/Queen Indian if I know i play against strong tactical players
Against e4 --> e5 pretty much the complete repetoire on the dvd's of Gustafsson (really the best CD's about e5 for black better than Michalchisin's dvd) sometimes i play my old love caro cann
Against c4 and Nf3 it is very mood based either grunfeld like setups or c6
With white I always play d4/c4 unless black plays something like e5 or c5
The grunfeld setup against 1.Nf3 is proven to be less "good" then against 1.d4. You should checkout Larry Kaufman's book "The Kaufman Repertoire for Black and White". It fits your repertoire perfectly.
sorry instead of in comment #65 when I wrote "not as good" I would like to take that back and say viable for a grunfeld player.
Against 1 e4 I usually play the Sicilian Najdorf or Ruy Lopez
Against 1.d4 I play the KID. I used to play a Slav as well, but am starting to poke around with Grunfeld
Against 1.c4 I again play KID or 1...e5 English
As far i i know my caro-kann and and qgambit has been suffering lately.
