There is a group that meets every friday from 7 till about midnight in St Pete. 540 4th St N, right across the street from the coliseum. I'm the only girl in there and that is a bit of a bummer. Last club I was in had about 10 women in it.
They do blitz tournament at night for $2 to play. To get in is free and you don't have to be a member. Leave your board at home, they have boards and the nice ones (not the cheapy plastic ones). It is kinda small but for the amount of people there it is sufficient. They also do bigger tournaments in scholastic and an open $500. Think it starts April 4th.

The Internets a good resource for bringing chess players together. I know of one chess.com member who was successful in bringing a group together from scratch. I imagine the Internet could be quite useful not only in bringing women chess players together but in bringing more women into the sport. Hope you see more women wood pushers @ your club soon :)

My family lives near St. Pete. Didn't know they had a good chess club there!
A great place to start a chess club is meetup.com
I do not personally have the time to organize one (and thats probably why more aren't around). But I checked on it and there is over 30 people in this area alone looking for a chess meetup to start in the area.

I have played in the $500 Open. There were about 25 people in the tournament I played in. At the same time, my son played in the scholastic tournament right next door. He had a great time! They host both of these tournaments on the first Saturday of every month. It's a great thing to do especially if you have a school aged child who wants to get started in tournament chess. Every kid in the scholastic tourney gets either a medal or a trophy!
