I believe chess players lack imagination these days because of the overwhelming increase in resignations of games. This has led to a defeatist attitude which has poisoned the minds of players everywhere.
Read John Watson's Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy and you'll pack away those Miniver Cheevy views of yours forever. Actually, players are much more creative, aggressive, tactical and interesting than they ever were before. It's a true Golden Age that we're living in.
