    Like Morphy or Steinitz.
My aim is to play again there games but a player who is like 2200-2300 elo now.

    Please.

"In 1978 Elo published a book entitled "The Rating of Chessplayers, Past and Present" which contained the historical ratings of 476 chess players."

I am surprise of the evaluate elo of the players od the 19th. I was thinking there were more under 2400 elo than above 2600.

This chessbase article describes a non-rating method of comparing players of different eras.

(Morphy is mentioned but only in the "hook".)

Morphy is between 1500 and 3000, depending on who you ask.

So Elo wasn't providing ratings list for international players well before then!?

I didn't know that you were referencing TalDude's link at all. You didn't indicate this so I didn't assume it.

    Miscommunication I guess.

I see what you're saying but I didn't interpret the OP's post as referencing actual Elo ratings as opposed to estimated ones.

Remember that the ratings are in comparison to other people at that time.  It is not an absolute scale like temperature or something.  If Morphy was estimated at 2600 it doesn't mean that he would be playing as well as a 2600 today.  It is a relative scale.

Take Sonas' figures in the same light; they reflect relative dominance within a time period. They are in no way absolute measures of strength.

Tactically, Morphy was one of the greatest genius we had to date, and definetly not a 2300+- player... Even by todays standards.

Janowsku was also one of the top players at his time as well,

FWIW, Reb, a 2265 FIDE here, says Morphy would kill him and estimates him at about 2600.

It's an old debate, how the time machine Morphy would fare.
