Fischer or Karpov?

Robert J Fischer also known as Bobby Fischer was one of the top world's players who mastered the skill of e4 and was the world champion right before Karpov. Anatoly Karpov on the other hand was a very deceint Russian player who earned his rights to be the world champ. but he never played Fischer for the crown becasue Fischer died too soon. it is still a debate of if Karpov would be world champ if Fischer didn't die. it is similar to the cause of the debate if Paul Morphy would be champ instead of Stienitz if he didn't grow sick and die. This is another big what if question that will remain a big what if question.

If they had met for the World title in 1975, Bobby would probably have had enough to thwart Karpov's bid to unseat him.

The reason Fischer and Karpov never played was because Bobby made outrageous demands that FIDE did not agree to. Bobby died way after the match was proposed. Bobby threatened to walk if his demands were not met. FIDE did not meet them, Bobby walked, and Karpov therefore became the new world champion. For who would have won, its really tough to say. Some people say that Bobby made so many outrageous demands because he was afraid of Karpov, thinking that Karpov could have beaten him. I believe the popular opionion is that Bobby would have won but not by much. Karpov himself said that Bobby would have probably won, but later when he was much older and toughened by his experiences with Kasparov, said that he had a very good chance to win. Unfortunately, we'll never know.

I thought he just demanded that he would keep the title in the event of a draw.

So in a way, Karpov must have been lucky otherwise he may not have had his chance until after 1978...

I don't know, but the question that may attract debate: Was Karpov a deserving World Champion, considering he won the title by default?

Ok just for discussion sake, lets set things in perspective here:

    1. Most ppl believe Fischer wud have retained his title had he met Karpov in 1975

    2. That being the case, ud Karpov have been a serious challenger in 1978, or maybe Korchnoi or others get above Karpov in the pecking order?

    3. If Karpov didn't get a 2nd chance at the title by 1981, wud his aspirations of becoming WC floated away?

So, n summary, if Karpov was not champion in 1975, cud he have won it in 1978, 81 or perhaps not at all.
