High school drop-out players?

Sort:

Hi,

I found intriguing that some people achieved great things in their fields without formal education such as Bill Gates (Microsoft), Peter Jackson (film maker) who never finished high school.

I discovered that chess is not without such personal story. The best chess player ever Boby Fischer dropped out of high school at 16 to reach the highest rank of chess.

Do you know of any other chess player who despite lack of formal education was able to reach Grand master ranks or competing for the world championship?

Gates dropped out of college. Education is a relative term. What's considered a good education to one person may not be good to another. One person could have a masters degree in business and another might have a 4th grade (formal) education and the one that spent more time in school might know even less. Even score less on tests. Some have the ability to learn at a different level no matter where they are in life.

Gates graduated highschool and went to Harvard (but didn't finish college).

You're right for Bill Gates sorry

The list of successful high school drop out is notheless quite long.

Jim Carrey, Seth Rogens, Carry Fischer...

I wonder if it was to be found in chess as well. We know that Bobby Fischer is a great exemple.

Anyway, back to chess.  I don't see how highschool helps chess at all.  In fact it should be very advantageous in terms of chess skill to never have any formal education at all.

And how it would be very advantageous? (I am curious.)

One might think that the more education you get, the more able you're to be succesful studying chess. But in term of raw chess skills, I agree that it can be found in people that cannot even writte or read.

I wanted to know if there was succesful grandmasters out there, that have   reached that rank without formal education beyond high school.

Would like to know if anyone has suggestions.

Thanks.
