Internet Chess is rapidly losing its appeal as there is an increasing number of players using engines. This is certainly not a human contest anymore but engine against engine and apparently there is no way to detect this which means the gradual death of Internet chess.
I don't agree on several levels. Certainly at the 1200-1800 ratings area where most people - including you - are playing then there are few engines being used otherwise those using them would be rated higher. Above 2000 there may be some engines used, but chess.com does have ways of detecting their use and has expelled a number of users for cheating.
In all seriousness, I think otb chess is real chess...so there will always be people like me who come here just to learn and play...if someone is using an engine...well, I guess they'll be consigned to only being good on the internet until they get bored.
I fail to see the problem here. If my opponent is using chess software and I lose, surely I will learn a lot analyzing the game when finished. And if I win, maybe I have improved my chess enough to beat a centaur by my self.
My point is that whatever the result you gain more than your opponent that is using an engine.
I get the feeling the OP thought someone was using an engine against him in a game where he got smashed. Correct me if I'm wrong and you are just bringing this up.
Maybe, maybe not. It perfectly can be a sincere opinion... I'm not tend to read between lines, I prefer arguments. I think that way it is more fair for all.
Skepticus, are you assuming that most people play chess (primarily or exclusively) in order to "learn a lot" or "improve" their skills? You seem to be ignoring the fact that many (most?) people play primarily to get some psychological satisfaction out of winning. The learning and improvement of skills is often (usually?) just means to the end of getting that satisfaction. I dare say it's the main reason people use engines.
In any case, I've just solved for a win for White after 1 h3. I was going to post it -- there are surprisingly few variations, actually -- but then even over-the-board chess would lose its appeal for the original poster and many others on this site. On second thought, it's probably better for humanity if I destroy this solution once and for all ... [drags file to recycling bin]
I'm assuming nothing. I just aired a position that works for me. But I agree with you in the psychological satisfaction of winning, no matter the means.
Funny, people have been saying this for at least ten years now. Guess what? Internet chess is still alive and well!
True, but ... almost everybody plays blitz, like 3 0 and 5 0. Here, if you encounter a cheater, at least you haven't wasted too much time with him. Internet chess has gradually become another type of chess, where even games with 15 minutes per side became extremely rare.
True! It's such a shame we don't have more long games because of the cheating fear...
remember, there is no "meat" in cheat, so if you cheat you get nothing to eat and intellectually you starve.....this thought seemed very profound at the time so i posted it......perhaps it wasn't such a good idea, the jury is still out....but i digress..........
I like this answer. Cheating is vain. What is the point? Not only does one starve intellectually but there is no self gratification since an engine gets the credit. In my opinion cheating is sick.

The point is to win, at all cost, and to deprive the opponent from victory and any spoils that may bring.
such as them yelling that you used a computer.
comp users are button pushers.
eat cheaters
YUK!! No thanks!
For me personally, playing chess online is just an opportunity to improve my chess skills. Because this rating is meaningless to me, it doesn't matter as much if I play a cheater. Sure I'll be frustrated for awhile, but eventually I'll move on and just try to learn from my defeat. As long as the large majority of the games that I play are engine free, I try not to concern myself with those who might be cheating. And seriously, everyone needs to take these losses more lightly. If someone beats you brutally and you suspect cheating, just report the game and move on. Don't make another post about cheating online. (I'm not accusing anyone of anything, just a point I felt like posting.)

While this may be sage and worthy advice (it is ), do you really think all 500,000+ users are tuning in to read this?
That may be a crux here.
Thats why I don't like internet chess that much.
