Magnus Carlsen...

Does anyone find it depressing for their chess to have a 19 year old fat kid from Norway, who hasn't even hit puberty yet, as being the number 1 in the world? (European fat, not American fat...) and none of us will ever reach a level anywhere near him no matter what we do in chess in our lives???

With Kasparov you had a great talker, you had a diplomat, you had someone who might/does do really well with power in government, at least I felt that way. And Kasparov is handsome, energetic and has a big head lol. I could believe that it was all this that made him smart and his smartness made him so great in chess.

Fischer also was a skinny, analytic mind, sense of justice (even though I didn't always agree with his beliefs), even the old interviews he gave when he was young seemed brimming with warmth and intelligence and wit... but Carlsen... ehhhh... Topalov, Anand, Kramnik, even Korchnoi I could all believe as being of at least really high in brainpower...

I used to think of most people who succeeded in chess as being quite intelligent, patient, usually refined gentlemen. A sort of a skill, a way to get you thinking in an organised way. It doesn't even matter much that he's 19 if he could pull it off well like Fischer...

I have half a mind to think he is just cheating his way there. Who on earth are these people rooting for Carlsen?! Teenagers? It sort of makes me want to quit chess for good (and maybe I'd be better off).

What makes you think Carlsen is stupid? He's just modest.

Give me one reason why Carlsen is stupid except for the very stupid and immature comment about his age.

You don't play much online, do you?

Besides, Carlsen is patient, and he is the perfect gentlemen. Kasparov however plays takeback. And the only time Fischer got warm was when he thought about the warmth of gas chambers.

Fat?!?! If he is fat, then almost 80-90 % of the world population is heavily overweight...And stupid? So just because he is not the most carismatic person in the world he is dumb? Yes, just remembered...You gotta be pretty dumb to get a Elo of 2810Smile

whats it matter how smart he is, IQ is irrelavant if your playing at a 2800+ ELO rating seriously.  what more do you have to think about...just chess, he dosent need to know what the velocity of a falling pufferfish would be if dropped from a airplane 1000 feet above the desert traveling at 300 Km/H...seriously, if all he can compute is the next best thing in the KID so be it as long as he plays good chess.

But what's the point in us playing at all at our older age if that guy just does it like clockwork and isn't exactly someone you'd want to look up to??? I'm not trying to insult him too much, I'm just saying that if HE'S the guy we're aspiring towards... then maybe we're headed in the wrong direction if you know what I mean. In soccer players or football players, they need a certain guile to get where they are and it's reflected in how they give interviews. You don't see Dexter playing on the tennis court, they have to be at the very peak of human performance, athletes. I used to think it was similar in chess but for oozing of brains instead, and very strong and fit brain metabolism, like how Kasparov said you have to be physically fit to play good chess, but this guy...

chessaholicalien wrote: What makes you think Carlsen is stupid? He's just modest.

Because... you can tell just by looking at him and how he is in interviews. He's not a very bright fellow, and he's just 19. Who knows anything at 19?! At least in other sports it's 26 or 27 they peak at, dear god I hope this guy doesn't get better. And why would you want to have him to aspire to?!

"aspieboy wrote: What makes you think Carlsen is stupid? He's just modest. You don't play much online, do you?"

Gentlemen and great athletes can be rude, of course. You might have somewhat of a point.

Well he's a bit pudgy for 19. 19 year olds shouldn't be like that... it will get worse as he gets older unless he starts eating better now. 19 year old athletes at the height of their profession should not be like that...

What are you on about?! I said nothing about IQ, chess requires being smart and being trained in the right way at an early age. But it does require being smart to some extent at least. The whole idea of IQ is that regardless of your experience of math apart from a basic grounding, the math tests should assess your intelligence overall. Personally I find the idea of IQ as kind of silly, especially the verbal parts of it (and the non-verbal parts of it test your intelligence about as well as chess does).

"tricklev wrote: And the only time Fischer got warm was when he thought about the warmth of gas chambers."

You think so? I meant the warmth of a good, intelligent speaker. If you look up his old interviews you can see he had that. He was quite good and interesting in his conversation... the very opposite to Carlsen.

You can hardly judge someones intelligent by looking at them, and so far I hasn´t seen him making a stupid remark, or making a fool out of himself anyhow, the same can hardly be said about Fischer.

If that is fat to you, you haven´t got a healthy relationship to weight.

The truth is that chess isn't a game of only hard work. To rise to the top you have to have that natural talent. Magnus definitely has that. Just because maybe this is disillusioning to you, doesn't take anything away from Carlsen.

As far as him being a "role model" or whatever, as with all athletes, I let their performance speak for themselves. I don't care how ugly, short, tall, skinny, fat, skin color, or whatever, I just let their game speak.

"I have half a mind to think he is just cheating his way there. Who on earth are these people rooting for Carlsen?! Teenagers? It sort of makes me want to quit chess for good (and maybe I'd be better off)."

This comment is extremely rude and immature. He is an extremely talented player, who is supported by many strong chess players as they see his skill and aren't blinded by foolish things as you are. Oh, also I believe Kasparov supports him. Doesn't get much better than that.

This thread reminds of the Central Asian tale (Kirghiz to be exact, geography buffs) about the village conquered by a Mongol Khan. The Khan said the villagers would be forced into slavery UNLESS they could bring him a messenger that would not come on foot, horse or camel; and not walk on the road or the field. None of nthe sixty-year old bearded wise-men could figure out how to do it. Then, a five-year old boy comes up to them giving the answer, the messanger will ride a goat along the edge of the road. .

The point of this is that sometimes, there is a rare young person who is better in any way, shape, or form than his contemporaries. It's not that young people are always better than older people in chess, however, there is such a thing as an exception. The only element I see in this post is JEALOUSY!!!

I prefer Fischer to Kasparov. Anyway this whole post is stupid, he isn't even fat and don't be racist that's againsts site rules. Fischer skinny, hardly Fischer is normal yet you say Carlsen is fat ?! If carlsen went any thinner he would be around Fischer. I think you know nothing about chess at all.

    Are you stupid?

First off he aint fat, he was good before Kasparov taught him, and he's smart (School-wise).

    get your fact straight.
