Ultimate 30 player round robin tournament, who's in(historical and modern)

Which world champions and GMs past and present would you say belong in the tournament to end all tournaments?

ClemsonTiger

Let's keep it to 30 players to avoid any watering down...also up for discussion is who gets left out and why

ClemsonTiger

Given enough interest we could have brackets and voting for which players advance

Bobby Fischer earned his spot, but he would be left out, cuz hes dead.

Although I dont believe that the past GM's would look as good against modern ones. Much more theory known now a days, online chess, alot of theory has changed in the last 20 years to boot. Look what happens when Magnus plays guys like Kasparov. He seems a move ahead of them all.

ClemsonTiger

Deceased players can of course be included, seeing how it's just a wishful thinking type of tournament

ClemsonTiger

I believe players like capablanca, lasker, or fischer would be very competitive and even exceed modern pla

Players

Capablanca even by modern standards played the most error free of all past and present champions or grandmasters. All without the benefit of computers, engines or databases.

It would be interesting for sure. Fischer was my favorite, but going mad hindered his future.

Lets just say he would not play in our round robin because the lights are too bright.

ClemsonTiger

He might play if we moved it into the broom closet.😀

ClemsonTiger

Yes indeed, Bronstein belongs...had Botvinnik on the ropes and came oh so close to being champ

AndyMadness

I would say future Wei Yi, may sound a bit weird but I think he has the potential to become more than legendary.

PeterSkeel

Bent Larsen was one of the strongest tournament players of his day and should as such be included.

Robert_New_Alekhine

I agree with all....Steinitz! Lasker! Pillsbury! Morphy! Zukertort!

ClemsonTiger

So capablanca, fischer, bronstein, botvinnik, carlsen, steinitz, lasker, pillsbury, morphy, zukertort, larsen, though im not so sure about yi and stein, when some legends and world champions are still not included

ClemsonTiger

Namely, kasparov, karpov, petrosian, smyslov, tal, alekhine, anand, marshall, rubenstein, etc.

ClemsonTiger

Korchnoi and reuben fine also

ClemsonTiger

Right, i forgot those, but botvinnik has already been included...how about mir sultan khan, howard staunton, nimzowitsch, reti, and i forgot spassky

ClemsonTiger

Aaron nimzowitsch...father of hyper modern movement, held his own vs the likes of capablanca, lasker and alekhine....we should make each player a numbered seed, and have higher seeds play lower seeds like the ncaa basketball tournament

ClemsonTiger

But maybe modern players like aronian, topalov, nakamura should also be included due to their ratings
