I just don't know. There are too many to choose from. I would have to list them by time periods.
Vesselin Topalov.No one here mentioned Topalov, a man that has won Kasparov in his peak.Topalov once had 2813 ELO!Second highest ranking ever achieved, how can everyone forget this guy?he is a force to be reckoned with.I eager for his rematch with Kramnik, this time in Sofia, and playing at home he will get back his title.
bobby fischer,capablanca,napolean(really like those knights)-#1 would have to be morphy! i learned how to play chess from fischer's book how to play chess so living would have to be bobby fischer.

Topalov is a great chess player, but I doubt he'll make anyone's favorite list seeing as he's such an idiot.

My favorite is Paul Keres, but without any doubts Kasparov is the best. I also admire Najdorf and Morphy.
I am my favorite chess player. I think the best player is Anand. But I still like Topolov. Paul Morphy is my favorite dead player. If that makes sense. He would still beat me. My favorite player that acts dead is Fischer. My favorite that plays dead is Kramnik. My favorite dead person is Hitler, because he's dead, and Napoleon since he sucked at chess.

Capablanca, Rubinstein, Karpov, and Kramnik for their phenomenal endgame skills. Judit Polgar for proving women can play chess just as good as men. Antoaneta Stefanova... she's the first world champion to regularly play the Scandinavian. :)
