I'm adding my voice to HOWARD STAUNTON! If he had just played Morphy, he would have gone down in history as a great chessplayer, designer/approver of the greatest chessmen design EVER, and a classy guy who, among other great players, lost to the greatest chess genius of the century. His reputation today would be intact and admirable.

As it is, in ducking Morphy, he gets written into history as a childish, petulant coward who edited a somewhat successful edition of Shakespeare's works.

I read that he was gifted at coming up with ways of getting out of playing Morphy.

Staunton was the discoverer of the Morphy Defense...

I'd add it more improper directed at IBM board of directors, then, and now for refusal to make a wrong right. And, I felt that they knew Kaspar had been over-underpaid afterwards but did not recollect this at any time.  Deep Blue was a well-done movie, but I'm sure IBM lost some status in serious for strutting into such an old game, and mucking around, and then foregoing a dishonorable outcome to the GM and the game in total.  I was thinking that any computer chess engine could be beaten totally and easily by a team of top players, contrary to what the engine writers would say.  

I am sore about the way Fischer kind of mythed a departure turncoat and I feel he lost some status that everyone had wanted to give him easily...

It sounds like the above writer Alucardll from Ireland gave Kirsan Ilyumzhinov  a proper recollection in lowered status.  

Actually, I think my least favorite player is Ben Finegold.

Only because I had the displeasure of meeting him at a tournament once, about 25 years ago.

I was brand new to tournament chess. Rated about 1200. At the stage where I'm still hanging rooks. Finegold was not yet titled. But rated about 2300, 2400 maybe.

Was looking over a game I just played with my coach. And Finegold is laughing at my play. Heckling. "Oh! He couldn't have just played Bc3,. that would have won too fast!" Total butt hole.

Now I realize that was a very long time ago. And was only a teen-ager back then. Maybe he's matured. But it is not the sort of thing you just forget.

Maybe my ex wife would qualify as she lied in court [while I was not there to defend myself] and got me placed in a jail cell with a whole bunch of drug dealers. Luckily that situation only lasted a few hours...

I'd have to surmise that I am my only least favorite player in all of chess, based on reasoning that I am performing by my own choice to the least of my expectations measured against those I might have of any player in all of history.
