Judit Polgar only had a plus score of 1 against him, he got some draws and even wins on her back in the 90s.  For such an old man that was an incredible feat!  His endgame technique was simply breathtaking and a true virtuoso of chess.  However, the fact that Botvinnik's second secretly helped Smyslov kind of tainted his title a bit according to some, but I think Smyslov simply had a better grasp of rook endings than Botvinnik, resulting in his win.  He wasn't a paper champion as commonly believed, rumor has it that he was ordered to throw the return match since the USSR favored Botvinnik.
