With Chess 960 the pieces don't conform to the usual starting position. Other than that, the rules remain the same.

In Chess 960 the starting position is symmetrical, and the king must start between the rooks to allow castling (and each side must have a "light" squared bishop and a "dark" squared bishop).

Maybe you were thinking about Shuffle Chess?

Interesting, this symmetry. Of course, the starting positions of white and black are symmetrical with respect to each other. How about "symmetry" between left and right sides of the board, except for the king-queen duo?  In twenty Chess 960 games, I have been privileged to have only one such "symmetrical" starting position.  It was: BRKNNQRB. I think that there may be 17 such starting positions -- if not, I stand to be corrected -- among the 959 different starting positions of "Chess 960".
