It's just like normal chess except for the fact that the back rank is placed randomly. It isn't that different. I would suggest to play an unrated 960 game.

but how do you set up a game of 960??

You mean on this web site? Go to Home -> Online Chess. Then "start a new game" and change "with the usual options" to "with the options i select". Then change "Standard chess" to "chess960".  This only works for online games, live does not have chess 960.
