Rotational Chess

Here's another variant I came up with.  After each move (one move for white and one move for black), the board is turned 90 degrees and the directions for the pawns change.  Here is an example.

Now the board is turned 90 degrees and pawns that are already on the 8th rank will promote.  The board will look like this.
Now white can play, for example, c8=Q.  Black will do the same: f1=Q.
    Now the board rotates again.
    This game would continue on.
Castling rules are the same.  As long as the king and rook didn't move yet in the game (and the other rules of castling), you can castle, no matter what the board position is.

Me and my friend played a similar variant of our own invention at school once. Instead of moving a piece, for your turn you could change the orientation of the board. However, we also said that pawns could not queen, they just advanced to the eighth rank and then stayed there until the board was flipped again and they could advance the other way.

I played the King's Gambit, and won ;)

    We never played it again.

I just found a variant called rotating chess.  It is at http://www.chessvariants.com/fiction.dir/hitchhiker/hg2.html at the "SPACE" section.  However, if I'm understanding this correctly, when the board rotates, the pawns already on the 8th rank doesn't promote.
