Since a part of my upcoming exams will be about radioactivity:  pick 3 chess pieces and match with the properties of alpha beta and gamma radiation:

Alpha:Least penetrative, most ionising-Helium nuclei

Beta:Moderately penetrative, Moderately ionising-Electrons

Gamma:Highly penetrative, Least ionising- electromagnetic radiation.

What would be analogous to ionisation, in chess terms?

When an up quark turns into to a down quark via the weak nuclear force within a neutron, the resulting W- boson decays into an electron and antineutrino much the same way that a knight moves on a chess board.

lol. I don't get what you are talking about except that quarks are quantum entities held together by gluons within the nucleus. And an anti-sth is like a twin particle existing in a parallel universe. Right?

What I was reffering to is the beta decay which causes beta radiation. Sorry for not clearing that up. I assume then, that you are studying simply the behavior of the radiation, rather than it's origin?

look at my age and you'll see. I have heard of what you are talking about though,  but never got my head around the notion.

Why is it like a knight?

When you have the appropriate qualifications it's easy to see who doesn't know what they are talking about.

I purpose you have the the Knight as the gamma, seeing as he can jump over things. Then have the bishop as beta, he can penetrate (diagonals) and can cause some damage. Alpha = Rook, lots of damage, but harder to penetrate :(

I don't know what the answer is, but maybe this helps.

I was also going to propose exactly this, for exactly these reasons.

Alpha:Least penetrative, most ionising-Helium nuclei Pawn, not so quick, but when it is in your opponent territory very dangerous!

Beta:Moderately penetrative, Moderately ionising-Electrons Knight, it can jump, but still not very fast

Gamma:Highly penetrative, Least ionising- electromagnetic radiation. Queen of course!

Having the queen as gamma is ridiculous. In fact, your entire table is ridiculous. I'd rather the guy had a pawn in my base then his queen. His queen is goign to rape my pieces, his pawn is just doing to die.

Well, let´s keep it nice, won´t we?
The thing i was talking about was the activity of the a/ß/y compared to activity of the pieces. The pawn idea was the promotion-fact

What would you promote the pawn to?

This shows the 64 sub-boards that make up the chess board. When you think about it, each square is an intersection of so many different lines based on how all of the pieces can move to and from said square. Red lines show horizontals and verticals. Blue lines show diagonals. Yellow indicates the moves of the knight.

So we aren't just playing with a board of 64 squares, but a board of 64 intersections. Just some theoretical stuff to think about.

How does the queen 'rape'?
