Why is it that that for some vote chess games, I can see the current votes *before* I have voted, and in other games I cannot see the current votes until *after* I have voted (in the latter case the "votes" tab doesn't appear until I vote).  

I have tried to determine if it is how specific games are configured, or if it is always the first game I look at that does not allow me to see the current voting.

Yes, the admins have the choice to set this option on or off for specific vote chess games. Sometimes we prefer to make the vote chess games where you cannot see voting results until you make your vote and other times we can make it so that you can see the voting results at all times.

we kind of decide which way we want. what do people prefer? there are advantages to each way... :>)

i would prefer to see votes before you make a move. this alerts you to early voters before discussion has taken place.

also all that happens is those that have voted and can see the voting simply post the results in the forum for all to see.

I definitely prefer being able to see the results before making my move.  As PerfectGent said, someone who has already voted always ends up posting them to the forum.
