We are having discussions about removing our captcha on the registration page. I just wanted to get a quick feeling about it from the users. How many of you were put off or bothered by the captcha and considered not registering because of it?

If you don't know what captcha is, its that little random code you have to type in when you register.

Its not something that bothered me. It seems more and more sites are using it nowadays.

For me Jay, I didn't mind it for registeration... though I'm not sure of it's purpose for doing things like making an abuse or bug report. Just my $0.02.

Didn't mind captcha, but it can be annoying when you get shown an image that's scerwed up too much.  Perhaps a question related to chess would be more user friendly instead?  For example:

How many squares on a chessboard?

Or something to that effect.  You definitely need some sort of verification to prevent spambots from registering though.

Its no trouble entering a code and if it is, maybe it's a good thing you don't sign up.

I've never heard anyone having trouble with it.

It did not bother me at all and it is a good prevention method against spam accounts being registered.

Didnt bother me but then im used to it having registered at dozens of forums.
I would agree that it doesnt seem necessary when reporting since ye have to register to join the forum in the first place.

Most sites have varing degrees of "difficulty" of captcha, the harder ones can piss me off a wee bit, but this one here was ok.

As someone else mentioned, a question could maybe be added that a bot wouldnt have programmed, which ive used instead of captcha in a forum before and it worked pretty well. Either way, without some method of checking its a human registering, the number of spam registrations tends to get ridiculous after a while so ye must have something. Cheers

if someone doesn't have the time or effort needed to enter a few letters and numbers I don't think they are of much value to this website. Making a decent move often takes more then a few secounds, these people that don't wanna take the time putting in these letters and numbers will most likly time out alot and/or stop coming to this website all together after a short time.

I despise captcha. I can deal with it, but plenty of others can't.

Oh yeah -- keep it -- not a big deal at all -- especially if it helps keep the losers out.  However, you might have to up your game in the future -- see here.
