Hey chess.com! I have a great idea! Wouldn't it be great to play different chess variants on the #1 chess site? Take a break from those normal games and put some variety into your day! Play bughouse, chess 960 and all kinds of other variants.

It would be great if you consider this erik, and I'm sorry if I'm repeating a past topic.

I think your own question annotation is appropriate :)

?! = dubious Yell

I'm teasing (kind of). Variants are a low priority at this time because a small number of people play each one, so you have to just keep adding more and more and they appeal to smaller and smaller numbers of people. Plus, where do you show all of those ratings and stats for each one??

Anyway, it isn't happening in the next 6 months :)

DPG1232,

Donate a million quid a year to erik [after-tax, trust-fund, for 10 years] and you'll have 5 variants of your choice.

It takes money to run a site, dammit!Ever tried to sustain a site providing popular services??? It's a vicious circle unless you are careful; if your site gets popular you get bandwidth-congestion and have to pay for higher bandwidth.

And the labour? You think erik and co are robots who don't need food, air, rest, company with family and friends, relaxation, ... ??? Even robots need maintenance, energy source ...

The site is great as it is.

"I'd like to never see it happen..." - well that is accurate, eg

"I don't believe that x happened" is idiomatically but NOT logically the same as :

"I believe it is not true that x happened"

Logically (but not idiomatically Frown )The first expresses an absence of a belief; the second, a presence of one.

my first pref: no variants - ok, bughouse or the 2-person version crazyhouse maybe, in due course ... but restricted to premium members

my second pref: a few variants, restricted to premium members only [by level of membership] - preceded by a poll restricted only to premium members ... and implemented only if a certain category of premium members exceeds a certain number, said number not neccesarily constant or revealed to the public.

[I'll stay free or eventually go for diamond: as I've generally done in life. (forgot 3rd option - i may be kicked out ... :) ]

there could be only one variant and free members could only play a certain number of the variant games at the same time

Is this the most quotes (although pointless) in a post?

Chess960 would definitely be a cool feature.

To steal an idea from chessgames.com, what about a Chess960/Fischerrandom vote chess game?

It wouldn't require full chess variant support, but it would let people play and analyze a good (hopefully) Fischerrandom game, and could be used to judge the popularity of that variant. Smile

Were they available, I'd probably play variants almost exclusively but I know it's not going to happen any time soon.  Variants I'd love to see: Seirawan Chess (which is essentially Capablanca chess on an 8x8 board) and Fischer Random.  Gothic Chess would also be quite interesting.

Fisher's 960 is something I'd love to check out.  I'm sure the admin could start a poll seeing how many people would be interested in vairants, or this particular one.
