Nice work Erik. Kudos to you and the staff for allowing so much input, albeit many diverse opinions.
The only thing that I can say: great job!!
can we have an 'abort' option as a choice, should either or both players decide to abort the game ? that removes it from being lined up on the 'wait' list for resumes - if players would rather abort than resume... on each individual game it could be a choice -
additionally, can we have a 'request abort' button on all games, live and turn-based ----- to give players that as an option - if one requests abort and the other doesn't want to - decline means player a cannot request it again and again and again, each move.... until after player b requests abort. .............
I see this as an improvement no matter how you decide to go about it. I really hate being disconnected and automatically forforfeited, and I suspect that many of us have connection issues that will continue after Live Chess is stable. That being said, the problem with people having to wait for timeout while their opponents are disconnected isn't really a problem in my experience because when my opponent is disconnected, I usually get the message that I won because the game was "abandoned"-I don't know exactly how this works now because I haven't had an opponent disconnect since the changes were made. When I have to wait for my opponent's clock to run out, it's generally because I've been disconnected and my computer hasn't recognized the disconnect. A good test to see whether you've been disconnected or your opponent is simply taking a long time to move is to type "hello" or "test" into the in-game chat tool. If your text appears in the chat tool after you've hit enter, you have not been disconnected (if it doesn't appear right away, be patient-it sometimes takes a few seconds or more to appear-the problem is when it simply doesn't appear).
By the way, even if there's no time penalty for disconnecting, using disconnects as a stalling technique could backfire as the disconnector's opponent can use the extra thinking time to HIS advantage!
i think the number of people who intentionally disconnect is relatively negigible. I just think people either get mad and quit the server, or just their internet fails.
intentionally disconnecting = getting mad and quitting server, imo.
well then they aren't going to want to get baack online then are they :P
What happens if player A or B continues to disconnect 3-5 times, BUT continues to reconnect every 90 sec. for whatever reason? In other words, I think they should only get 1 chance AFTER disconnecting per game.
You can only disconnect from the same game twice. You can't resume after a third disconnect (it's in erik's original post)
it seems to not work correctly, this morning, in a game with jansen_santiago, I was winning on time and was disconnected by the system from live chess - (not from chess.com), and when I was able to log back into live chess - about 45 seconds later, found that I had been awarded a loss for the disconnect. at the same time, I still have one adjourned game (due to my opponent disconnecting the other day.)
I don't like the disconnector rule because honestly, these days my game disconnects about 50%! Isn't it possible to make it so that clicking on the x (which automatically disconnects) count as a resign but when it says "you have disconnected" it doesn't? I think another problem is that live chess has been very unstable recently. About a month ago live chess was actually very good, I only disconnected a little more than 1 out of 10 games. I disconnect much more often now, and when it was stable I didn't really even care about the disconnects!
One of the reasons I don't play on chess.com live is because I don't trust my internet connection. It's a problem I've been having with the wireless system in my house and the fact that we have three or four computers on and tied into the network (work related stuff). However, I still agree with Erik's plan.
elubas, as much as I hate to say it, you should probably just focus on correspondence games like I have done and set the time limit to 1 move a day. My home cpu literally would disconnect every 30 minutes from the internet no matter what. So I had to take up correspondence :*( sorry.
This sounds like a good balance for the disconnecting policy.
It must be my computer or internet. Now I refuse to play long games (my favorite) until this disconnect rule is finished. My long rating now is 1360 and I have as a result of a decrease in rating had to play less experienced players (Their ratings are similar but they clearly have disconnected less than me!), I would crush them, then at about halfway or longer through the game I would disconnect. I think out of my long games (They're not ultra long just 15 15) I've disconnected 9 out of the last 10 games, all of which I was winning! Now I think my rating is awful as it's usually over 1500, and that is my true strength.
when will we see the new system for disconnects in live?
working on it. sorry it hasn't happened yet. crazy times. but the good news is that piotr (main live chess developer) is coming on full time to chess.com!
HUGE UPDATE: since I started playing again (two weeks ago) I've been playing about 10- 15 15 15 games and not one disconnect! My rating had dropped about 150 points lower than it should be, and I did in fact win just about all of them. I'm very suprised how stable it is now! If it stays like this, we won't even need the disconnect feature! (but I think it should still be done)
