Is there any place on irc where people from this community are? If there isn't maybe we should make a channel on some server for that. It'd be fun to have a chat room with people from the forum. I could probably set one up somewhere but I think it's better if someone with more computer knowledge do it instead.

When I'm on that topic anyway, do anyone know any irc channel for chess that's at least fairly populated?

I really like this idea. Can anybody set up an ircd? I would love to chat in real time with fellow chess players.

IRC is the biggest pain in the ass ever. I have seen one too many video game communities switch over to that nuisance. I highly reccomend chess.com to stay far away from IRC. Its not user friendly, you have to learn a shitload of wack commands and you have to download and learn how to use it. Not worth it.

What are you talking about? IRC might be the easiest chat system there is and besides if someone sets up a irc channel somewhere for chess.com people I promise we won't force you to join.

I think that is not necessary.

It would be interesting, but I would not want members to become overly focused on chatrooms as opposed to chess.

Honestly, most people have no use for IRC. The geeks will geek out, and the unaware will keep using the site like always. It won't supplant the site or the forums. In fact, if it gets popular enough, it would be pretty cool to hold an occasional chess lecture or Q&A session. No?

Why does it matter if it is necessary or not?! The people who don't think it is "necessary" could just choose to NOT participate in that chat then. Personally I think it's a great idea!

Thank you for the suggestion for live chat. Once we get live chess going at full speed this will be the main way for Chess.com members to live chat with each other.

I think that it would be nice to have an IRC channel.
