I think it would be great if some time in the future the daily puzzle comments would not appear until the puzzle is solved. I am going through the old puzzles and am sick and tired of seeing comments that give away the puzzle. The comments show up a few secounds before the puzzle does and i cant refrain form reading the first couple of comments the split secound they come up.
Is anyone else annoyed about these comments as much as I am?
(I am sorry if im bringing up a old topic, if I search 'daily puzzle' i just get the puzzles)
I read the comments like "first", or "first colored" or "easy" and I just laugh. I used to get annoyed, but some of them are obviously poking fun at those who really think they've accomplished something by posting first, or second, or whatever.
Regarding the "easy" comment, again I crack up. Some of the puzzles are indeed easy, but others are by no means easy and take a bit of time to consider before actually moving a piece. Yet, some players are posting 1 minute after the puzzle is posted stating "easy." It's just a humorous reminder how so many people need justification and value from other people, even if they have to lie to get it... lol.
Regarding your comment about revealing the answer to the puzzle in early posts, I guess that, again, people need to feel smart by posting the answer. I certainly understand the discussion about possible variations, or the questions by the confused or the I-don't-get-its, and even the thanks for the puzzle posts. But people have to pose to get attention, even if it possibly ruins it for others. All this to say, I guess you just may have to discipline yourself to not look at the comments before you actually look at the puzzle.
By-the-way, is that Elk Grove Village, Il, or Elk Grove, Ca? (The reason I ask is I live very close to the latter.)
Cheers!
Given the difference in effort between changing the code for that one particular forum topic and the reader being disciplined enough not to read the posts, I think the latter is a better solution.
I realized the same thing you did and also realized that I can click the link and simply look away from the screen for a bit, or hold up my hand so I can't see it.
The elk grove in sunny cali =D.
about the comments stating 'first', I chuckle at the thought of someone sitting waiting for the clock to strike 12:00 so they can click on the daily puzzle realy quck and type first (and then edit or post another comment if they were secound).
I guess ill just have to look away until the puzzle loads up XD

lol
But i just want to say:
You all say that you´re getting annoyed when you see all the same posts, but what do you do here...?
Actually, dedpoetic, you've just given me an idea. These goobers posting first could actually make themselves useful. One typical phenomenon in the daily puzzle comments is that someone will post what they think is a bust to the puzzle and someone else will explain why it's not. A few posts later, the same bust is given. If all the supposed refutations were collected in the first post along with why they are not refutations, perhaps we'd get less repeats in the comments. So, whoever posts first should have the responsibility of collecting these into their post.
A bit diffult, innit?
I think the puzzle title is the biggest give away, but I just focus downward and scroll down a bit so I don't see it. And don't look in Hot Topics until I've done the puzzle, because the puzzle title is often there from all the valuable comments ;)

I applaud you, AquaMan. (I'm not sure how valuable applause is from me, but there it is for what it's worth...)
Ya the title does give alot away... But I decided to post this thread after someone posted something along the lines of 'after you see the knight sacrifice its easy'. It ruined what i thought was a very good puzzle and i was pissed that I didn't get to solve it for myself.
But sometimes on rare occations you'll have someone that will actuly post the solution, as if everyone visiting that page couldn't just check the diagram... my question to those people is why? lol
