Correspondence Chess is obviously the choice of the members according to the "vote." It must be very frustrating for Erik to want to change the name to "Daily Chess" or "Slow Chess" (Comment #19), to then set up a "vote on the name!" so he can make the change with the benefit of the vote's imprimatur of his choice (after all, he had already declared the "old-school names," one of which is "Correspondence Chess," to be failures even before the "voting" started) and appear to be merely acceding to the preference of the membership, and then after all that have the survey turn out "wrong." After all, the "voting" is still 50% for "Correspondence Chess"--33% more than the second most popular "new" name on the list--and only 8% for each of his choices. Now he seems to face an unpleasant dilemma. He can either autocratically shove one of his choices down our throats (in the same manner he is shoving the new user interface down regardless of the dismay and disapproval of many) despite the clear preference for "Correspondence Chess" expressed in the "vote" by the members (his customers who presumably provide him his living); or he can rename it "Correspondence Chess," which is not his preference. Maybe that's why the voting is still open--to give it more time to turn out "right." If that's the case, the vote may continue in perpetuity! Realistically, isn't it time to change the names of "online chess" or "turn-based chess" to "Correspondence Chess" while we are all still alive to witness the change?
The quality of this site does not depend upon the irrelevance of the name employed for correspondence chess. Those who seek it will find it no matter what you call it.
Oh, if we're settling down to Serious suggestions, what about this?
(go ahead, shoot me down, I can take it!)
"More Bangs for Your Bucks Chess!" (don't worry --- I'll be quiet, now)
My gracious me! As a gentile Suth'n lady livin' in Geo'gia, ah would Neva allow a "scream" to pass my lips! Even if mah plantation was suddenly invaded by Yankees (!), ah would simply let out a soft, high-pitched little "oh, deah!" as I swooned gracefully, endin' up on the floor, beautifully arranged, with my ankles crossed demurely and one arm over my head, curled so as to frame mah unconscious face.
(I have WAY too much time on my hands today....)
BAWchess (Bored at work chess)
cChess (championed above - short for correspondence chess - I like this one!)
DPchess (Daily Play Chess)
DeepChess (what it says on the tin)
DPMchess (Day(s) Per Move chess)
ClickTurn (or CT) chess
Vitamin Chess (one a day!?)
PDC (Per Day Chess)
Tea Break Chess
Turn Based Chess
ChessUnlimited (kind of!)
Spaghetti Chess (meaning you have enough time to talk yourself into a mess)
2012 Chess (you can play till the world ends)
ChessTZ (Time Zone)
No Clock Chess
Martini Chess (any time, any place anywhere)
ATAPA Chess (any time any place anywhere)
MOONchess (it's a three day trip to the moon.....)
STARchess (STop And Rest)
And now some "fun" anacronyms!
PLAGUEchess (Play Like A Grandmaster Using Engines)
GONADchess (Go Offline, Never Any Defaults)
I could probably go on... but time is ticking... hehe.
Good luck in your quest Erik!
I vote "Turn-Based". The "online chess" initially confused the hell out of me for the first 2 months i played on this site.
As mentioned by The Grobe the brand element is important in names. If name included say, "Worldwide Chess 24/7", the name appearing online, internet correspondence is obviously involved and implied.Within the site the phrase "Online chess "could be replaced by"Basic chess" , chess base or somesuch.
Turn based chess isn't really helpful. Have you ever tried playing a game of chess that wasn't turn based? The long playing time (day or more a move) style chess was always called correspondence chess but I have noticed a shift to other terms now. Server chess seems to capture what it is. It is played on a chess server and isn't super silly fast. Not that it bothers me much, I don't (won't!) play here and only look in occasionally.
Which offered choice did you vote for, your Lordship The_Peacock ? If you have not yet done so you could be vote 2222 if u hurry !
As stoic and distasteful as the term 'correspondence chess' might be, it IS what 'online chess' IS. Making a move and waiting for your opponent to correpond. Only a few years ago, email chess was popular -- but it was still called 'correspondence chess' -- and that's what this is. There really isn't any other term that 'online chess' is analgous to.
It still means you have long periods of time to move the pieces around, and make long-term plans.
I, too, was very confused with the term 'online chess' and have always had to resort to the phrase 'correspondence chess' when trying to describe it to friends. Nothing else describes a game where turns take days.
Possibly a miss- understanding exists ...turns may be made immediately, fast as u like. Game could be over in minutes if both players move quickly .Especially so if blunders like mine are made!
None of the people is happpy!!!! Some want to keep it online chess & others hate it. Some say turn based and others hate it. Some say correspondence chess and again others hate it! Let me tell you I hate the correspondence name! lets just keep it the way it is..... The people that arent happy get a life! we dont care about ya! Chess players will never be saticfied as a example you can read all the comments that WILL FOLLOW!
Makes sense to me. We're chess players -- and we're supposed to be smart. "Online Chess" is what chess.com wants to call it -- and eventually, we've all figured it out. Just leave it alone and enjoy. It's 'online' vs. 'live'.
I liked Chess Unlimited --- then found chess.com already has a group with that name --- how 'bout "Chess Without Borders?" --- nah, Médicins Sans Frontières would probably sue....
"Instant Access Chess?"
"Benign Addiction Chess?"

"Move Whenever You Feel Like It, Within Reason, Chess"
"Convenient, Anytime Chess"
"Intermittant, Unpredictable, Optional Variable Time Limits, Wave Transmission Chess"
"Your Choice Chess"
"Choose Chess!" (double meaning! Get it?! )
P.S. Mostly these are really more sales slogans than name change ideas. Feel free to use them, Erik --- No Charge!
P.S. Mostle these are really more sales slogans than name change ideas. Feel free to use them, Eric --- No Charge!
I like how this motherinlaw thinks, which is rare for most people. And correction: you should charge Erik!
