So recently I've been playing live chess as my preffered game here at chess.com and I've started to run across more and more players who try to intimidate or berate my play during a game via chat. While the function can be good to help discuss tatctics and such most people add their gg or lack of gg in my case if i'm disturbed by my playing.  The open chat window usually seems to get out of hand too with mods beeing necessary at all time or else people start to spam or talk about uncessary things. To me the cons outweight the pros for chatting in live chess. As long as there are people out there who will want to insult others duing play its seems best to not have the functionality or at least be able to turn off chatting as is possible in turn-based chess.

No, Alpha has a point. We can disable chat in the game windows of turn-based chess, but not yet in live chess. I think the centralized chat (in one of the smaller windows) serves a useful community-building service, and chess.com moderators are working hard to keep it appropriate for our community.

I'd wager that disabling chat in the game windows will be a part of future builds. And if the centralized chat distracts you, it's easy to minimize that window, or select something other than Chat in the tabs.  Thanks for your candor, Alpha.

Great point Alpha0, and lame response, shaxmat64.

Alpha0, we will at some point make chat disableable. You will also be able to add people to an ignore list.

Thanks for yoru suggestion!

Is that a fun word, or what? Say it three times fast: disableable disableable disableable

I think we've stumbled upon the world's shortest tonguetwister! Laughing

I think it is a shame that people need to feel that they have to intimidate someone in order to make themselves feel better. I guess they do not understand the meaning of the term "good sportmanship".

Some people who play here are hobby players who maybe played when they were kids or in high school and have not been played in a long time. Chess is hard enough for them to play but it is even harder if it becomes a bragging contest of whom plays better or whom can beat others.

Remember that you are playing another person who has thoughts and feelings the same way that you do. You should treat others the same way that you would like to be treated.

Live and let live and everything should be fine.

its a shame that chess requires an "ignore list" in order to satisfy everyone, it is a shame that certain people ruin it.  I am not saying it is not necessary, but I still find it a shame that on chess.com... something would come to this measure.
