how do you get points, do you get them if someone else posts in your topic?

Points on the profile show only how active a member is on the site... you get points everytime you post a blog, forum post, add a photo album, news article etc .you can't do anything with them, just shows others if you are an active member on here thats all :)

You only get points for what you post
