Last night a popup add from chess.com tried to download a virus or spy-ware to my computer set off my virus protection. I understand that chess.com does not have complete control over the content of the adds. Remember, just because chess.com is such a wonderful and reputable website does not mean that it is "safe."
That being said, you shouldn't be online at all without virus protection.
Again...
I tried chess.com with different types of OS (both Windows and Linux) and didn't have any security warning.
GenericZebra
What antivirus soft are you using?
buy membership and then you dont have to buy a virus protection for 100 bucks..
life is good.
It's try, it is possible I may have a virus on my computer, as no protection is %100 effective. My virus protection alerted me a download that was coming from a window that chess.com had opened to show me an add. It gave me an option to close the connection, which I did. No harm done it seems.
@Dmytro I'm using avast.
I do not wish to be misunderstood. I'm not complaining about the add supported nature of this site. I'm fully aware that there are bills to play, and that Erik and the staff of Chess.com deserve remuneration for all of their hard work. However, I believe that the staff need to understand that the add service used here reflects upon chess.com.
Don't go on the internet without virus protection lol.
What exactly happened?
@SerbianChessStar
So pay up or we download malware to your computer? I don't think that extortion is the marking stratagy chess.com is looking for.
No, thats not what i meant,
i just ment like not all ads are safe and if you want to be safe surfing the web, might as well buy membership..
its not like erik is doing this on purpose
@ GenericZebraohh, you use Avast, now it's obvious..best just to get a different anti virus and try again to find a safety issue.As much as I know avast is probably the worst (real) anti virus you can get.. the free AVG antivirus (for example, not talking about the best antiviruses like Kaspersky, Norton which became popular lately and such) is better.
by the way - I'm not saying that avast is not good (although I think so) or that there wasn't any malicious ad, I'm just saying avast have tons of false allarms
My virus protection worked fine, that's not the issue. I've used AVG before as well.
SerbianChessStar I didn't mean to imply he was. In fact I assume that if he was aware that the adds on his site were pushing malware he'd do something about it.
the basic AVG antivirus is still free:http://free.avg.com/
A couple of months ago I had a virus from chess.com. It masqueraded as a virus protection warning.
