green/red signals

I'm wondering what the green and red "signals" mean, you know the things that show that someone is online. Green is commen but I still don't know what it is specificaly, also does the red mean that they are on live chess, on the game that you are playing with them or other? Please only reaspond if you are sure about the answer. Thanks!
