I think this is an excellent idea, but the information needs to be available to all members, including free ones.  I could even suggest a further refinement that shows how many moves were in the average game that ended in resignation compared with checkmate.  If someone consistently loses by checkmate in 50 or 60 move games, and rarely or never resigns, then we will know to avoid this person unless we want a game that lasts for months.  That could be an added feature for the benefit of paying members, but all members should know how many games someone has lost by resignation and by checkmate.

The data proposed in this discussion is collected from SURVEYS of the general chess.com population. It will not provide identifiable data about any member - premium or otherwise. The results of surveys are published for every member to see.

However, onosson (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/resigned-game-stats) and rich (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/game-archive-idea) recently explored the idea that chess.com could start collecting individual resignation stats on everybody.

We could use some more trophies to give to those that lose a game. so far it's either good game, or good sportsman ship.... We could use about 7 or 8 more for a little variety.

Trophies with movies quotes woulde be funny, or  rock songs quotes.

How about a picture of Freddy Mercury, and the quote: "I am the champion, my friend" (Ok, that was lame)

how about a "worthy opponent" trophy for those players or friends you play frequently that you have an almost or equal win/loss record against each other. Maybe have two people in karate uniforms bowing to each other.(or something to that effect)

We have currently 60 trophies to award.

I think that anywhere between 200 and 500 trophies available would be a good start, the total number not to exceed I think 500.

What is needed from here on I think is to suggest or organize trophies in groups.

Reading all of the posts, the following categories can be a start up point:

1. Jokes, post #85

2. Friends several posts, see #5

3. Smiley's and winks and other        emoticons.

4. Difficult gains, #9

5. Groups and tournament trophies.

6. Loosers, posts #44, #45

7. Incredible, post# 18

8. Mystery, post #43

9. Game of hazard, luck, fortune

10. Chess pieces, posts #71 and #89

11. Winners

12. Pictures of unbeatable one's, Karaspov, Fisher, Carlson, J.Polgar, etc..

13. Nature trophies

14. Flower trophies

These are a few suggestions, from the posters and myself.

I suggest that additionally in each of the categories there could be one open trophy, where a member could post his image or picture of a trophy to be sent to the opponent.

Anyone want to suggest more or different categories?

I deleted my Post #109 and it is replaced by post #110. Artfizz now occupies post #109 ,by rule of deletion he is promoted one post up.

In my post #110, after item #11 the odd shape of the text is because I had pictures that where not inserted in my post.

I did not save to preview and edit as this is how I ended up with the mess in my previous post.

I need to learn to insert pictures or images in my text.

i could not read through all the ideas but there are a lot of good ones.  However, in response to an earlier statement that online chess has to work correctly, i would like to say that anyone who claims to employ logic in their life should be using mozilla firefox browser.  So far i have not experienced any problems with it on this site, whether playing live chess or otherwise.  it is hands down the solution to the majority of internet problems and it is free.

The current 56 trophies are presented 12 to a page, using a size of about 1/2" by 1/2" (equivalent to Large Icons Directory View under Vista). If the number of trophies becomes much greater, scrolling through them a page at a time will become distinctly tedious. One possible alternative is offer a smaller icon size as well (say medium Icons in Vista terms), which would allow 25 icons to be displayed in the same space now occupied by 12 large ones.

A difficulty with the categorization Paul suggests is that no two people will agree on the categories; they will be too subjective. If it were possible to sort the trophies by name as well as by their chronological order of creation (i.e. the current scheme), that would help those people who organise things verbally rather than pictorally.

One factor possibly holding back more widespread use of trophies is that you can only view them at the point of awarding them. If they were first-class objects (like chess games or forum topics), they could be viewed at any time - independent of a particular game or opponent (without having to resort to the Billium Method trick).

Current trophies as of February 9, 2009.

Categories I have assigned, each category is for people that belong to the category:

1. Sportsmanship, (3 trophies): good game, good sportsmanship and novelty alert.

2. Looser, ( 33 trophies): you swept me, I slipped, fishy play, strikingly strong play, precise

calculation, sorry about the blunder, I want a rematch, key move, brilliant tactical play, great

end game play, you’re a winner, fire on board, you cleaned my clock, sunken ships, my error,

great defense, strong fortress, exhausting games, dynamite win, beautiful

construction, drunken blunder, back to the drawing board, checkmate ambulance, I surrender,

a-maze-ing, inventive game, blown away, lucky, surprise ending, narrow escape, mystery,

second place, mental relaxation.

3. Winners, (5 trophies): did you let me win?, cruising, moving up, sailing to victory, you let

me off the hook.

4. Chess pieces, (8 trophies): pawn magician, knight virtuoso, Bishop commander, lord of the

rook, connoisseur of the Queen, King of the board, PWND, connoisseur of the King.

5. Draw, (1 trophy): masterful locked position.

6. Nature, (6 trophies): sly like a fox, top dog, eagle like precision, game imprint, cat on the

key board, mouse slip.

I have categorized the various trophies available, you may switch a few around in the

Categories, I have assigned  and the % by category will not deviate by much.

So, by category in order of priority, and there are 56 trophies currently available at the time of

this post, and I checked them out, today  Feb 9, 2009 at 8:15 pm in Canada eastern time:

1.Looser, 33 trophies          59% of the trophies?! A chess annotation asking why so many in

this category.

2.Chess pieces, 8 trophies    14%

3. Nature, 6 trophies             11%

4. Winners, 5 trophies            9%

5. Sportsmanship, 3 trophies  5%

6. Draw 1 trophy                    2%

 Total:                                 100%

This grouping shows certainly a skew curve, the Gaussian curve interpretation, in favor of

loosers trophies, stats on this site do not  reflect such a preponderance.

This is why I suggested a new layout of categories.

If people do not concur, so be it!

We can use the restricted groupings above and have more trophies by category.

Using your number of possible 25 trophies per page we would end up with at

least 250 on 2 pages.

So what is the limitation here? Sorry do not know how to change bold characters

here I have tried to no avail and I am not shouting.

Just to add, artfizz said:”A difficulty with the categorization Paul suggests is that no two people will agree on the categories; they will be too subjective. If it were possible to sort the trophies by name as well as by their chronological order of creation, that would help those people who organize things verbally rather than pictoraly.

I do not think there is any need for this approach or suggestion. In the first place chess.com invented the trophies they did not ask anyone, and they did a great job.

I think it is now time for the community, the members, to propose something.

So we do not need 2 or a 1,000 people to agree on the categories, we either need a referendum or a simple decision by Erik and his team.

Sorting trophies by name is not a bad suggestion, but sorting by chronological order of creation is the domain of specialized people and I have not only no use for it as I cannot find any, or have no use of the history of the creation of the trophies either.

What counts it’s the number of trophies we have to offer.

With only 6 categories we can offer 150 trophies, twice the amount today and in organized fashion.

Bids are open at $1.00

Regarding surveys, the only option currently available is a discrete, multiple-choice variable (radio buttons). Could support for numbers be added? This would be much more natural for surveys such as: How many chess.com groups do you belong to?

A further refinement would be to collect TWO items of information e.g.

In how many games have you RESIGNED?

None
Less than 5
Between 6 and 15
More than 15

WHAT is your rating?

less than 1000
1001 - 1300
1301 - 1600
1601 - 1900
greater than 1900

This would enable some interesting correlations to be made.

In addition for us all that play against newcomers or are called greeters, the same stats on how many games have the newcomers resigned would be of value and it would be also interesting to see our stats excluding the newcomers that quit the game, as the total number of games played would be more factual and representative of our rating. Kind of putting things in perspective with a reality check and excluding from the set of total number of games, the subset of those unfinished and irrelevant games to our performance. Just a clearer picture of a player's ability.

Hi all,

Apparently it is easy to especulate with simultaneous matches.

I see some players using the vacation flag when they are loosing so that they restart the game once one's rating gets better so that theirs is not so damaged.

Suggestions:

1. the rating should increase-decrease according to the rating at the starting of the match.

2. No vacation flag should be allowed at all.

3. There should be punishment for the abusers, or at least label someone with an "abuser" at the forehead.

4. Or even easier: forbid the simultaneous matches of a player.

Bests.
