How many games can you play simultaneosly?

Not being for a long time member of Chess.com, I noticed people playing enormous number of games simultaneosly. The question is : Where is the limit? Can they keep same quality of play in every game? Should administration forbid playing too many games in the same time? Sincerely, it does not look serious to me!

Right now I'm in 2 tournaments. All my tournament games on top of random games, I have about 21 games going all at once. Right now I'm in the openings where my territory is still fairly familiar. We'll see what happens when I get to the mid game where things start getting messy and require lots of thinking.

I find 10 to 15 my maximum for good quality, but usually have 5 - 10 on the go.

I think players with many games (over 50, but I've seen someone with maybe 100) like to train their ability to quickly judge positions. I don't think it's a great idea though, I can't see them having time to review their losses. Also I think they always like to have moves to make in gamesm and let other people do the waiting.

Often it annoys me when I'm up against one of these players in tournament game, it drags on and is often the reason for a tournament round taking months and months.

I would like to see some quota system, but doubt anything like it will happen. Common courtesy should make some of these players show some restraint

An upper limit sounds reasonable to me. Just to help keep the site moving quickly. But the limit should be something that someone with lots of time on their hands can handle. Say 100 games. Thousands of games going at one time isn't very reasonable. More likely someone goofing around seeing how many games they can get going.

That victormpm  guy is playing 340+ games...

That's what I call dedication.Smile

And I think he'll win every one of those...

Under 20 for me is the best, anything over 20 and my rating begins to fall. :(

Sure anyone is permitted to keep going as many games as they like but I think the original poster was contemplating how many are possible if you want to play well and improve. Some of the abovementioned players have a huge amount of games going but their win percentage is rather low. If they aim for quantity over quality it´s fine but I think it´s worthwhile to ponder how many you can manage while actually concentrating. It´s a good question to which everyone has to find his/her own answer since the style and capacity of thinking varies so much from person to person.

Invariably, you will find that the right [number of games/time per move/vacation usage/inclination to resign/use of databases] at chess.com is whatever exactly matches that of the poster.  Anything else is [cheating/disrespectful/cheating/ignorant/rude/cheating], and should be disallowed.

I had close to 100 games going at one one time on another site, now just 12 feels much better.. Smile

I had about 130 going at the same time, but the vast majority were against people rated 400+ points lower than me.

I like the question as posed, but I also like to ask how many you think you can play against people rated around your strength.

Hey, I know this is off topic, but has anybody tried to play blindfold? If yes, then have you ever tried more than one blindfold at the same time?

I've done blindfold, and I kind of think I could do 2 (one white, one black) but then it would be tricky.

I have done two at once. None of the games were very good but I selected weak opposition so I won on all occasions.

I find two 10x as hard as one game blindfold.

AWARDCHESS

1,300 at www.chess.com + 600 games at letsplaychess at the same time, it was done last Season by me...

What is a 10x? Can you explain your shorthand for us ignoramuses? :-)

Translation: Two games blindfold were 10 times as hard as one game blindfold.

ozzie_c_cobblepot

Ah! Doh.

Did you play one white one black? Do you think that would help?

ozzie_c_cobblepot

Seriously. I find it very hard to beat a 1400 player blindfold. One player.

One illegal move and you LOSE.

The first time I played two at once I had white with both games but opened one with a Reti and the other with e4. They were distinct enough that I didn't get confused.

Later on I played two games taking one white and one black. No confusion but the greater burden of having black did tire me out a bit more I think.

The trick to this is the same as in juggling. So long as you don't drop it can look great, but if you drop during even a great trick you tend to look bad. So, I picked competition that I think I could handle. Like I said, I find two at once hard but am fluent with just one game.

Since you are a solid master you could manage two 1500s I bet, or more. The guys I took on my first time were non-USCFers--maybe 600 and 800 strength (I was 1500 then).

ozzie_c_cobblepot

I wouldn't tell them this ahead of time, but if I played 2 1500s to a draw each I would consider it a reasonable success. Sort of a proof-of-concept.
