After the inane "gg is arrogance" thread, I can hardly resist....
When I wish "good luck" to a lower rated player at the beginning of a turn based game, is that arrogance too? Am I being sincere or sarcastic?
While you all argue about it, I will be studying my games harder than you coming up with better moves than you.

On an unrelated note is 1790 class B or class C?
I usually just say something along the lines of "enjoy the game" since it is possible to enjoy and use chess in so many different ways

If I were you, I would immediately offer my apologies to anyone who has to spend time with me in the same window.

I'm only in 2 games so I have the energy to reply here AND to study my games.
I say that good luck is not arrogance, I say that it mirrors well what happens over the board. I said good luck to Nick DeFirmian when I played him recently. I think he nodded as well in a respectful manner.
Then he won.

Of course...haven't you been married?
It's not just what you say, you can be criticized for what the other person thinks you didn't say..."Good Luck...(you're going to need it)."
Interestingly, you both know, you didn't say it.

I like to be as clear as possible, so I always type it like this:
Good Luck (*Scoff!*)
burnsielaxplayer
I usually greet all of my opponents with "Hello and good luck" even if they're rated higher than myself.
planeden
i think "gl" is arrogant because it shows that you think you are good enough that you wont have enough time in the game to even type out two whole words. gl = "i am going to play bullet chess with you while you read through opening databases and use rybka18, but i am still going to mop the floor with you without expending as much effort as it would take to even type 'ood uck'."
typing it out though is just polite.

I've had lower rated players as well as higher rated players wish me good luck. I always say "Thanks, same for you" I like "have a good game" but I think the best is "have fun".
I thought it was more like "Good Luck... (not like it'll matter)".
Or perhaps "Good Luck... (especially if you play the Budapest)" (!)
Yeah, "good skill" does sound artificial. Sort of like you are trying to let the other person know that yes, you've thought about exactly what to say in that situation, and have come up with that.
Meh.

lol!

just say hi
pathfinder416
OTB, it's "Good luck (*snort!*)."
Gert-Jan
good luck is no arrogance. answering: I dont need luck I have enough skills to win is arrogance.
Mainline_Novelty
HEY! Don't diss Budapest!

When peope write "hi" to me it pisses me off. It feels condescending. As though I really am not worth any recognition at all, but just to be polite they offer a "hi" in what I'm sure is a superior sort of manner.
"Have fun" is definitely arrogant! It's pretty much just short for "Have fun losing, freak!"

After reading these comments I'm thinking maybe chatting should be eliminated or just be a totally seperate activity from playing.
Not chatting at all is the worst form of arrogance. Worse than all the others combined! (Just ask vance)
blakeyboy30
Well not really, unless you detail it.For example, higher rated player says to lower rated player:good luck,i wish this to every player with a lower rating than me,so do not feel insulted. That should do the trick!
