Sirs,
have you remarked on the broad range of addressing styles used in the forums? A careful analysis reveals that the prime, underlying factor is the difference in rating (what I refer to as the rating deference) between the two protagonists - or the age difference - whichever is the greater. This is best illustrated using two well-known chess.com members: R.G and 'Mr. Billium, Sir'
If there's a positive deference between you and the member you're having a discussion with, use Table 1 to select the appropriate form of address.
Rating Deference
Form of Address
> +1501
Mr. Gonnosuke
Mr. Billium, Sir
+1201 .. +1500
gonnosuke
Billium248
+901 .. +1200
Gatesy
billious
+601 .. +900
R.G.
batman
+301 .. +600
gunner
William
< +300
Roy
Bill
Table 1: Positive Deference
If, however, your discussion is with a member with a negative deference, then Table 2 indicates the proper form of address.
< -1501
-1201 .. -1500
-901 .. -1200
-601 .. -900
-301 .. -600
> -300
Table 2: Negative Deference
With a little practice, those awkward faux pas can become a thing of the past, and we can get back to playing chess.
Thank you kindly for your attention.
A fine lesson in etiquette. Something lacking in online venues.
