First of all, I am relatively new to the forums (and this site) so please excuse me if this is the wrong category.

In the list of countries and members on this site, it says we have 99,118 members and counting. However, I have a few questions and doubts about that. Is that merely the number of accounts or do you track the I.P. addresses? Are all those members actually active members (as in, are none of them people who joined 1 year ago, played a game, and then quit)? The reason I have asked the last question is because it does not seem like we have that many members. The most popular survey only has 1401 votes, nothing near 99,118 people. Also, although I have been on the forums for only a couple of days, I spend some time in the off-topic forum. It takes a very long time for a topic to go to the second page. This implies that there are very few (at least active) members. Can someone help me make sense of all these issues?

It is the number of people who have come to this site, registered, and activated their account. We don't disable accounts for inactivity, but we've only been around for 6-7 months, so your scenario isn't possible. :)

Still, if you went on the site at the beginning, played one game, and then left for 6 months, you are not really likely to return. Why do we not just include active accounts? It would give us a better idea of at what stage this site is on.

All we would have to do is sort the accounts by how active they are. Then, we can simply count ones that have played 1 game in at least a month and see if the accounts with vacation time on were active before they had to go on a vacation. I know barely anything about computer programming but it does not sound too difficult to do.

the creators are prob too busy but knowing them they will prob do it if you just ask because a few days ago a group of us asked if they can let us see our standing on the site and guess what......they did it!! so just ask erik or someone and if they like it they might do it.

we do have a count of how many players have played more than 10 games and have been online in the last 30 days - it is on the chess players page. about 12,000 or so... but not everyone who comes here plays chess. some just come for the forums, or the community and play elsewhere. so that count isn't really accurate...

Hi Feldmm1:  I suspect that many (most?) members, like myself, enter through via their on-line games page, make their moves, then exit without visiting other chess.com pages.  I rarely see polls and don't often post in forums although I've managed to acquire a few member points for posting other things.

The fact that many people have no member points is another indicator that they're here only to play chess and it's reasonable to expect that although they may visit other chess.com pages they don't wish to comment or vote.

100,000 members?  Why not?  This is the Internet.  Good sites attract speedy growth, and this is one of the best.

If you want to see how many players there are, click players from your online chess page.  There are now 11 400.  Members are different and dont necessarily play.  There are certainly some accounts which are not used any more.

For comparison, the Free Internet Chess Server (www.freechess.org) has close to 300,000 registered accounts with about 28000 active in the last month, 57000 active in the last 9 months and 67000 in the last year. I think it's a relevant comparison because FICS is another place to play chess online for free so you probably get similar inactivity measures.
