I guess this is the quickest and most effective way to reach the masses so here goes.

I realized the other day while browsing the groups on chess.com that I saw none that had to do with art at all. We have groups for sports, and chess styles, places, cars, animals etc, but none for photography or art. So I made a group that Im hoping I can convince all of the artists of chess dot com to come and populate and share their creative talents, and critique each others work, and talk about places to go and paint and draw and take photos; all things I love to do. Im hoping to get a lot of people who like to play chess too, so we can do some of that together too.

Join up at this link: http://www.chess.com/groups/view/artists  and let all of your artistic friends know about us as well.

Thanks, Galen

Is it just for visual art? Or literary, too?

Black_Magix,

I planned it for visual mostly but performing and literary artists should feel free to join too. Post your poetry and prose in the forums i guess.

I called the group artists and thats pretty general, so yes, join up at the link above.

Thanks perfect gent,

I like to reiterate the point that we want to play vote chess with the group, so getting some higher rated players as well would be great.

ok, its allowed. I just dont know how far i will let literary art go.

Ive been on some art sites before that allowed literary work to be published, and a lot of it turned pretty nasty/sexual.

Go ahead, post poetry and short prose pieces, but keep it PG and artistic please.

If chess is an art, than so is calculus, go and Halo3.

I dont consider chess an art, but if you do, your welcome to join my group and post your most artist game.

We use the word "art" a lot now adays. We say the art of freerunning, or the art of tile instlling, the art of this and the art of that. But one must draw the line, so here is the list of arts that is allowed in the group.

Visual 2D Design, 2d Mixed Media, Drawing, Composition, Photography, Painting, 3D Design, Sculptur, Architecture, Music, Dance, Acting, Poetry, Prose and Video as Visual Art.    If there are any i forgot, please remind me, i will update this post.

I'm an artist - but what is the point? I also don't understand the point of gay chess groups or christian chess groups or I shop at Walmart chess groups. Are there interesting discussions pertaining to chess and being an artist, being gay or shopping at Walmart?

Is there any point to anything? I dont know.

I think a lotof people are too hard core about chess here, as if nothing else could possibly be important enough to have a virtual space to interact in. If I want to talk about the red sox, i know who to play with, if i want to talk about art, i want a forum to do that in, or post work, or whatever.

I find that playing chess for the sake of playing chess gets a bit boring and i would never play OTB if i was restricted from chatting while playing. Its a game, it exists for our enjoyment. And if I enjoy combining chess and art, who are you to tell me I cant.

I'm with you on that Joe. I just joined the group. I've not joined one before so I hope we can get some fun stuff going.

I think your list of arts allowed basically allows anything that anyone considers art. All the categories you mentioned can be stretched to include just about anything (all the things masteryoda mentioned, for example). Also, I think it's important to note that fzweb said "Chess CAN be a form of art" not, "Chess IS a form of art". You resonded by saying calculus, Go, and Halo 3 are art if chess is. They are not necessarily art as stand alone concepts, but there's potential in each one to be the basis for serious works of art. Some people might even argue that Halo 3 is a work of visual, video, musical, and literary art (I'm not arguing that).

My point it, you have to be fairly open about accepting things as art. A lot of people take a lot of different meanings from a lot of different things, and a lot of people create things with varying degrees of artistic intent. Perhaps a game like Halo wasn't designed with artistic intent, but games like Bioshock or Portal quite possibly were. Perhaps most freerunners run with without considering the beauty of their actions, but what about the one who maps out a route to be clever, difficult and beautiful and then executes it flawlessly? Did he not just perform a work of art similar to a solo musical performance or a dramatic monologue?

Anyway, these are just thoughts. Feel free to fire some back at me. Of course, I'm not saying you should accept everything in the group. Things that violate the chess.com policies are not ok.

Ok I'm done. I'm glad you made the group. I'm looking forward to participating!

Lighten up on the hostility there - I wasn't telling you anything. I was asking a question.

Sorry if you thought i was being hostile; i was not. To answer your question, no, but there can be interesting discussions about art between two chess players.

Ive thought your ideas over and it really occured to me that art is something that is different for every person. No two people will ever quite agree on what is, or what is not artistic. Calling oneself an artist therefore is very subjective and so is joining a group for these so called "artists." Therefore, without creating a bible of what qualifies as art, there will never be any answer to the question, do i qualify. On that note, i invite anyone who thinks they are interested in the art that people on this site produce to join.
