I do agree with you up to certain level that Anand may have lost interest in chess (Whatever reason may be age, memory etc. ) and I really wish Carlsen will show something you mentioned in next WCC.
Now I work Tuesday night, so I may have to just not go to sleep when I get off work. There is a chance that I won't be able to do this, so there is even more drama for me personally
good luck with that Sharon. i have just swapped shifts with my friend, she's not too fussed about chess haha, so working tomorrow and got Wednesday off now, i'm really looking forward to it
It would be fun to
1.) have the tie break at the start of the match
2.) draw ECO-Codes for every set of two games. This is better than chess960 because you get real chess positions, but you have to start with a position after some moves. And nobody can prepare every ECO-Code.
Perhaps they should convert the WCC to chess-960 games negating much of the preparation & theory rerturning the title to chess-skill of the combatants ?
I expect however at GM level they would simply prepare for every possible 960 start-position. :))
10 out 12 games ending in draws, that's 83%. It is time for a variant. Chess 960 is good, but as you say the top GMs will find a way to memorize openings in those too. D-Chess has over 8.2 million different starting positions and only one game needs to be played.
Kasparov talked about Anand's play earlier in the tournament:
Anyway it was obvious from the beginning that they were playing not to lose. Gelfand probably had a chance in game 3 but he couldn't keep up the initiative.
Oh, think of Carlsen. Poor opening repertoire for that level, without any doubt.
His recent game against Gelfand was one of the greatest chess games ever played.
Why? He played ambitiously, with a terrific fighting spirit, and took risks. Oh, and he played FANTASTIC CHESS, something that did not happen even once in the A-G match.
I'm afraid that Anand is fed up with chess, and about to retire. He is in that match only for the money, and I can't blame him.
Gelfand- a great chess worker, but he never, ever was nowhere close to world champion status.
Couldn't agree more.
In the 1994-1996 championship cycle, Gelfand was one of several young players including Anand, Kramnik and Kamsky who were considered legitimate contenders for the challenger's spot even then. Gelfand lost his semifinal match to Karpov, and got further than Kramnik (whom he beat) and Anand (who should have beaten Kamsky in the quarters). That seems to have been about as close as Gelfand has come to the championship until now, as both Anand and Kramnik have surpassed him. At the time, however, there was no reason not to believe that Gelfand would go even further in subsequent cycles. Still, I'd call finishing among the top four for the challenger's spot pretty close.
I think Anand chose the wrong strategy in games #11 and #12...in both games Gelfand was down significantly on time, and Anand offered the draw too soon, rather than making his opponent make the time limit. Why was this? Is he too nice of a guy? We all know where nice guys finish...last.
...what was it...16 moves to make in 18 minutes? that's blitz right...there was a great chance that Gelfand would have made a mistake.
The Rapids are here...and the first task is waking up at 4am Wed to witness this. Speaking of which...these games will be going so fast, it may be very difficult to appreciate it at real time. And what about those annoying 15 min art commercials...they will take up the whole game ...
Prediction? Anand keeps going at Gandalf with early "out of book" lines to force the challenger to chew on even more clock...BAM...early exit to the airport...
Chess has been around for a LONG, LONG time. I believe that it will be able to reassert its true nature and bring all chess aficionados out of the dark forest of computer aided thinking and preparation. Computers and chess have only been around for what 20 years? That's a very short amount of time. It appears that this is the year that alot of folks are beginning to realize just what damage computers have done to chess. I've said it before on these pages: I can see a movement developing "from the ground up" and not from "the top down", for a return to the Basics of what Chess was and is and will be again!
In a way this whole situation is symptomatic of the problems that the computers have brought us as human beings. Sure they are great machines, great aids in many ways. But Chess is a human endeavor not a machine endeavor. Like any machine a computer has no soul, no conscience, no morality. These are the things that make us human beings. We'll figure this out soon enough.
In the meantime, these World Championship games/matches under the aegis of FIDE are not played for the officials of FIDE, or just the reporters in that auditorium. Chess, like sports in general, are played for fans. And if enough fans demand it there will be a refutation of the machine-like games that computers have wrought. The fans have the power here if they but knew it and used it. What if they gave a World Championship match and no one came? no one watched?
...well, if anything, the "fighting spirit" may be lacking in this WCC..but not the chess fan's "writing spirit" ...
How long until the rapid games begin?
FIDE made such a mess of the supposed World Championship, I cant even be bothered watching it.
You can fight ,deny, ignore ....but until you repent and embrace the true spirit of chess you will be watching draws from now on...your choice
are you infected with rabies,
problem in my mind is not computers but the format of the world championships. The fact that you have short matches against fairly skilled players noone wants to take a major risk. The current match the problem is that Anand realizes in a short match a loss can be the end of the match so he is playing safe and relying on the fact he is a monster in rapid chess to beat Gelfand. Can you blame him? I think that the match format is too unwieldly unless its sufficent length to make players take risks. Kramnik didnt want to play rapids against anand either and so had to push things earlier. Topalov the same. My feeling is that a big RR tournament with the top players is a lot more exciting even if its less 'traditional' it can also be done every 2 years and the qualification process based on very easy factors like ratings and 2 wildcards. This discussion goes around and around though and matches always bring big money for little overhead by the organizers compared to a tournament so things are likely to remain unchanged
Well if you had to play in that joke of a format you'd do the same thing. It sucks to watch but they're just doing what needs to be done to survive.
Some people are just too good at bluff.. And some if come in front of me than just blow their head with Martuul.. And insert them in Bosta.. And throw them in Dhansiri..
For head blowing, Martuul can't be beat! Whatever that is.
