Just wondering aloud I know that it is up to individual choice but is it sensible to have over 500 games active. I'm not too concerned about slow play but surely this is taking it too far.

It is up to the indivual. As far as I'm concerned 2-3 is enough at any one time. Livingston club championship where we were playing everyone in the Livingston group at the same time was definitely too many. Next club championship we should split into ability sections - e.g. beginner, intermediate and advanced. Where do you actually live? We are trying to get people who will turn up in person to play chess so we can hire premises and keep club membership fees low. We (Livingston) actually play in a "real" chess league, i.e. not just online and there you only have to play one game at a time! How does that appeal? Drawback is you have to leave the house, pay out some small amount of money and give up some of your evenings in a week. If you would like to play over the board and are in travelling distance it would be nice to meet face to face and play with an old fashioned chess set with wooden or plastic even pieces!
When I played correspondence chess in ICCF events, I liked to keep a game load of 18 or so. Six in the opening, six in middle game, and six in endgame or thereabouts.
