Untimed rated Tactics Trainer - is it helpful?

Sort:

I love this tactics trainer. I find that solving a few tactics is an excellent way to take a break from work. One common complaint I encountered in the comments was about the time. For many problems some people feel that the average solving time is too short and I think that they would like to have an untimed rated Tactics Trainer as well.

I don't need such a feature as I would use roughly the same amount of time to solve quizzes. However I think that, if there are enough requests, the staff can implement such a feature quite easily. So, post your thoughts here!

  1. I think tactics trainer is a great tool
  2. I have Unlimited tactics trainer just like you as you have a diamond membership and I've got a platnium membership!

We don't need an untimed Tactics Trainer, they just need to increase the amount of time to something reasonable for most problems. Eg, I solved 3 problems correctly today, 1 of which only 29% got right, took no more than a couple minutes on each, and lost points on all 3!

If you ask me, I am actually unhappy that many problems have too long solving times. I find it useless to have problems with allocated times of over 2-3 minutes. Not to speak that such long times allow for setting up the position in Fritz and "solving" the problem in this way.

What would they gain by such stupidity?

I agree. If they want to cheat so some number on some website says their good at chess tactics, then that's their perogitive.

Cheaters will cheat even if there is absolutely no gain from this. You can't expect purpose from individuals who have no purpose in life. But let's not pay too much attention to them.

I think that tactics it's all about spotting the next move, not about calculating long variations. And that's why I would like to have lower solving times for the problems in TT. I thought that many people are not happy with this, but strangely it appears that I was quite wrong, and untimed tactics trainer it's not a desired feature.

I would rather have an untimed, or at least longer time, trainer.  Now granted, I prefer slower chess, so I am not as stressed about finding the tactic instantly - I rarely if ever find myself in time trouble in the kind of positions that the tactics trainer gives you.

With the time limits the way they are, I typically can't fully analyze the positional realities of the game going on.  It would be more helpful to be able to combine the positional and tactical ends of the game in this way.

So for whatever it is worth, my vote would go for an "untimed tactics trainer" variant.

Here's an idea for the Tactics Trainer: it should calculate an average time for the ppl who got it correct and an average time for the ppl who got it incorrect. The time to solve the puzzle is then based on the average time of the ppl who got it correct. This will decrease the amount of time for the > 2-3 minute problems that actually need much less time and increase the time of the really short problems that should have more time.

idoun, this is how the time in TT is actually computed.

I too find the time aspect a strain though I wouldn't use the untimed version. OTB I play mostly rapid chess (10-20 minutes each a game), sometimes playing nine rounds in a day, compared to once or twice a month I play a single rated long game. I think the pressure aspect is important for my practice.

Having said all that, I don't see why the option shouldn't be available for those who are still "riding with stabilisers".
