VACATION on chess.com is a little complicated. As far as I know, it works like this:
In outline, this is the scheme for ACCUMULATING vacation entitlement:
All new Chess.com accounts start out with 7 days of vacation time.
All Chess.com accounts get 2 extra days per month, up to a maximum of 30 per year.
Gold: 1 extra day per month if renewed monthly; 14 extra days if renewed yearly.
Diamond/Platinum: 2 extra days per month if renewed monthly; 28 extra days if renewed yearly.
(There are slight variations depending on whether you pay monthly or annually, but they are not very significant.)
We have this situation (assuming no vacation has been taken):
after 1 year
7+24= 30 Days
7+36= 43 Days
7+48= 55 Days
After 15 Months
After 18 Months
After 2 Years
After 3 Years
After 4 Years
When it comes to USING vacation:
If you are on vacation for 12 hours, regardless of how many games in progress on which it is YOUR MOVE, the total vacation time you use up will still be 12 hours
Suppose you are a GOLD member, and you have accrued the maximum of 60 days (and not used any). When you put yourself on vacation, each of your opponents (when it is your turn to move), will see a message like this:
XYZ is currently on vacation! "XYZ's status message" They have 1 month 29 days of vacation time left, but may be back sooner.
When XYZ returns from vacation (after 12 hours), - before he switches vacation mode OFF - the message his opponents should see is:
XYZ is currently on vacation! "XYZ's status message"They have 1 month 28 days of vacation time left, but may be back sooner.
Note that minimum vacation duration in now 24 hours.
When it comes to USING vacation, chess.com calculates the total vacation time used = time spent on vacation * number of games on which it is your move.
If you are on vacation for 12 hours, and you have 10 games in progress on which it is YOUR MOVE, then the total vacation time you use up will be 10 x 12 hours = 5 days.
Nope. The time you've spent on vacation is not multiplied by the number of games. If you take a 12 hour vacation, you will be charged 12 hours; whther you have ten ongoing games or one.
Vacation days should be an absolute value counting only the number of "|calendar days|", note the math absolute symbol, away from the game.
Family disasters such as a home destroyed by fire or a flood or...the lost of a dear one or even a simple vacation away from home to visit friends or family or to go south for the warm weather, should not be penalized by reducing the vacation time based on the number of games in play and aggravate the player's situation by adding a complicated formula calculation to deduct the vacation time and furthermore adding an element of unneeded stress.
Vacation time should not be used as a deterrent to engage in more games. it should actually promote the number of games played, up to a reasonable level naturally, as more one plays chess, the more chess players will have an interest to continue playing, the Hygrade sausage catch 22:" More people eat them because they are fresh, they are fresher because more people eat them", one of the many business mottos and advertising campaigns thought at the university level in the business course, is always to be reminded of.
According to Puchiko, it does work the way you are suggesting - NOT the way I speculated.
Likely, my view, is that by using the computing formula that you have exposed, chess.com saw an opportunity to have the paying members up their membership level by one or 2 notches to get more vacation time, and up their $ intake, this is what business is all about.
Unfortunately, Chess.com did not convey this message at all, and if they did how do you find it??
Type VACATION into the Help box (at the top right of the window) and it bring up details of vacation entitlement for the different levels of membership.
Now that chess.com has acquired the members from Chesspark, the vacation time computation can be addressed, reviewed and revised with a membership that has reached 1.4 million members or so. Having a new vision for Chess.com future and considering the Pandora box received with the deal from Chesspark having their own features, offerings and navigation tools not to mention their very good homepage and other exciting offerings, one can only see the site get better.
The site map accessible from the bottom of every page does point out levels of membership and the Help system.
If I don't make a move I get a vacation. Wish my job was like that.
I cannot get my head round all them sums, I better not take any holidays then..
"Hard work never killed anyone ... but why risk it?"
A simpler way of looking at it is that within two years, everyone reaches their maximum vacation entitlement of 30, 60 or 90 days - depending on membership level.
Basic members get 2 days every month, 1 on 1st, 1 on 15th. When do premium members get those 4 days?
I think you get them when you pay, a monthly or annual boost, depending on your payment frequency.
Today is the 1st. Everybody look at how much vacation you've got. Check again on the 2nd, the 15th and the 16th - and report back. Then we can put this one to bed!
