I think nuclearturkey probably had the right response, vacation and non-vacation tourneys. I am currently playing in the 8th Chess.com tourney, but I know I am going on vacation the week after next, so without vacation time I could not play. People missing on vacation can be a pain for the other players in the round, but these tourneys can take a long time to complete if people progress to rounds 2 and 3 and so on. People need to get on with their lives as well as playing chess, so I feel the compromise is vacation and non-vacation tourneys so that players can choose which suits them.
