I believe the second puzzle is wrong. There's actually a forced mate in 3 that doesn't give black an opportunity to move: 1. Ra5+ Kxa5 2. Qc5+ Ka6 3. Qb6#.
The solution (as-shown) seems flawed to me; there's nothing forcing black to take the rook with the bishop. In fact, Rd3+ or Rg6+ starts giving black time (and options), meaning the solution - as shown - is not a mate in 2.
Am I missing something?
If 1...Rd3+ then 2. Bd5#. If 1...Rg6+ then 2. Be6#. In each case, white blocks the rook check from black with a discovered check, and each of the two black checks prevent black from capturing 2...Bxb1, due to interference on the h7-b1 diagonal.
Hallo "kings_Landing" : nice puzzles , in your second puzzle after white played kd6 , what if black plays kb6 instead of Bxb1. Is still a mate in 2 possible??
Yes. 2. Bc2# because it is a discovered check, and 2...Bxb1 is prevented.
Hi adriancook, mammoth
What about 5. Qf7 ???
I think 5 Qf7 is better. With 5 Qf7 we have mate in 8 moves. In the "solution", we have mate in 9.
Actually 5. Qxf7+ leads to mate in nine while 5. Rxf7 (solution) leads to mate in eight. Check BenTal post #90 which nicely shows these two lines as well as 5. Bxf7+ (also mate in nine).
For the second puzzle posted by Kings_Landing, wouldn't this be a second solution?
Yes if 1...Kb4. But if 1...c5, then no checkmate on move #2 for white.
stout defence to no avail
That took me a while
Enjoyed this one.
good puzzle very good
The check at last is worth thiking.
4. Bxf7+ Kf8 5. Be6+ Ke7 6.Qf7#
Yes! Much faster.
5... Qf6 extends the mate past 8
its not check mate
